Thank you...

Gail Schwartz would like to thank Rav Shai, Rav-Hazzan Glantz, Leslie Sokolow who, along with other medical professionals and congregants, helped me on Shabbat when I got sick. The outpouring of support from those around me and the members of AJ who reached out to me was overwhelming. It proves how AJ is a supportive, warm and caring community. Special thanks to Ed Moses who went above and beyond.

Thank you again for all the love,

Gail and Mark Schwartz

Calling All Artists!

AJ has many talented congregants and we'd like them to share their work with the community at an AJ art show. If you are an artist (either professional or amateur) and would like to exhibit/sell your work, click here to let us know by October 9. The show will be on Sunday afternoon, November 12. Local non-congregant artists welcome. If you'd like to help us organize this, that would be awesome! Contact Maxine Croul at tennismax1@yahoo.com or Renee Winegrad at reneemurals@gmail.com.

An Adult Education Resource for AJ Congregants

Congregation Adath Jeshurun, dedicated to the Jewish value of learning for its own sake (Torah lishmah), has partnered with the Orange County Community Scholar Program (CSP). As a partner, we’ll join a small group of synagogues enjoying the best Jewish learning available. AJ has the distinction of being the first Pennsylvania synagogue to do so. You can download a list of the courses and registration links for September here. Rav Shai recommends this one in particular: “Salvador Dali and the State of Israel,” on Tuesday, September 12, from 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM. The speaker will be Evgenia Kempinski.

If you register and can’t attend, a link will be sent after the event to a recording. There is also an archive of classes that you can view here.

***PLEASE NOTE: The start times (except where noted) on the CSP website are Pacific time, so remember to add three hours for the Eastern start time. The times in the download list are Eastern time.***

ANNOUNCEMENTS

JFGP Mitzvah Grocery Gift Card Drive Begins on Monday, September 11

2023 has been a challenging year for families facing financial hardship, compounded by SNAP assistance ending this past February. Food insecurity is significantly higher among those at or below poverty thresholds, with 46% of Jewish households that are at or below 200% of the federal poverty index identified as food insecure. From September 11 through October 9. You can purchase grocery store gift cards to be distributed directly to clients of the Mitzvah Food Program so they can purchase items they need from their local grocery store. We recommend gift cards from ShopRite, Acme, and Giant, as these are the stores most easily accessible to our clients. Gift card values up to $50 are the most helpful. Give any purchased cards to Amy Devine-Stretch or, if the office is closed, put it into the lock box to the right of the security doors that lead to the office area (near the keypad). You can purchase food through the Mitzvah Food Program Amazon Wish List so that products are shipped directly to a pantry. You can find out more by going to tiny.cc/2023MFPOYR.

Volunteer Opportunity!

Jewish Relief Agency (JRA) is aiming to be part of the solution by launching the Period Packs Project. Households with menstruating aged individuals can now opt-in to receive free supplies delivered directly to their doorstep alongside their monthly box of food. Opportunities to volunteer: Thursdays at 10:00 AM: October 12 and December 14. Learn more and/or volunteer at the link above. If you would like to make a donation to this project, click here.

Consider Helping MAZON and

the Broader Jewish Community

MAZON works to protect and strengthen social safety net programs like SNAP (formerly known as food stamps) because we know that our government must help us to care for each other on a scale that we can never achieve individually. Charitable organizations were not conceived to feed entire communities, but to help fill the gap of government programs — we must use our voices to ensure they are as expansive and comprehensive as possible. Make a gift today and your generosity will be matched by the Gene and Marlene Epstein Humanitarian Fund up to the first $10,000! You can also find out whether your employer is one of the many companies or organizations that matches charitable gifts made by their employees here.

Earn Money for AJ by Shopping at House of Kosher!

For any amount that an AJ member spends, House of Kosher will give 2% of the sale to AJ! All you need to do is mention AJ's unique Shopper Code 6611 and the discount is immediately applied as a credit to your organization.

Any first-time customer that is a member of AJ will receive a 10% discount on your in-store shopping of over $100! House of Kosher is located at 9806 Bustleton Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19115.
