Afternoon and Substitute Teachers Wanted!

Do you love children? We have a wonderful opportunity for you! Join our Early Childhood Staff as an afternoon (3:00 PM to 5:30 PM) and/or substitute teacher! Make some extra money and have fun doing it. All you would need are clearances and a desire to make a difference in a child’s day. Our Early Learning Center serves children from 3 months to 5 years of age. Please contact Tracey Perchick, Early Childhood Director for more details at tperchick@adathjeshurun.info. Selihot: Hush of Midnight

Saturday, September 28 — Minhah-Ma’arv-Havdalah at 6:30; Light Refreshments at 7:30 PM; Service/Program at 8:00 PM

This year, AJ and KI will be presenting “Hush of Midnight: An American S’lihot Service,” written by Cantor Charles Davidson z”l for Adas Israel Congregation in Washington in 1968 and was presented there for 30 years. It is an hour-long service, based on traditional nusach ha-tefilah with additional texts by Ruth F. Brin and has won the Television Media Award. The program is presented by The Old York Road Kehillah Choir, Shir KI, and former members of the AJ Choral Society; conducted by Alyssa Davidson; and features Rav Hazzan Howard Glantz and Cantor Amy E. This is the first of two fall programs that lovingly recognize the vast musical contributions of Charles and Frances Davison z”l. On November 17 at 3:00 PM, we will be treated to a retrospective of these dedicated musical partners curated and presented by the highly talented Davidson daughters. Both of these events are made possible by the Don z”l and Ros Waldman Hebraic Arts Series. Those who make a contribution of $118 or more will be recognized as angels on both programs. (The deadline for program recognition is noon on Friday.)

Break the Fast

Saturday, October 12 at approximately 7:30 PM

Break your fast with us on Yom Kippur at approximately 7:30 PM. We'll have all of your favorite Break the Fast fare including lox, whitefish, herring, kippered salmon, bagels and cream cheese. kugel, cheese, lettuce and tomato, fruit, assorted cakes, and beverages. The cost is $36 for adults, $20 for children 6 to 12, and free for children under 6. RSVP and payment MUST be received by noon on Monday, September 30. Call Beryl Rosoff-Verbit in the synagogue office at 215.635.6611, send her an email at brosoff-verbit@adathjeshurun.info (include number of adults and children 6 to 12), return the registration form that was included in the High Holiday mailing, or use this online form. You must be pre-registered to attend.

Commemoration of the Anniversary of 10/7

October 7 at 7:00 PM at Shaare Shamayim

There will be a Kehillah program in commemoration of the anniversary of October 7 at Congregations of Shaare Shamayim, located at the Keneseth Israel building. Nova attendee Matan Boltax will share his experience narrowly surviving the October 7th massacre. His story and presence inspires us all with strength and resilience. Sukkah Decorating and Pizza Party (Sponsored by AJWA Sisterhood)

Everyone is invited! We’ll eat, shmooze, and hang decorations. Bring the kids and any decorations that you’d like to contribute (original artwork encouraged)! Preschool families welcome! (All children must be accompanied by a parent.)

Dinners in the Sukkah

Throughout the week of Sukkot, we’ll be celebrating the holiday by gathering inside AJ’s sukkah and having dinner! See the offerings for each night below. All dinners will begin at 6:00 PM, followed by the evening service at 7:00 PM, except where noted. You can learn more about the dinners on our High Holiday 5785 landing page, or click here to register. Please RSVP no later than October 11.

Please note that on Sunday, October 20, our special guest will be Zoe Marks, a Captain in the IDF in the Etzion Region. She is currently an active reservist, 24 years old, and born and raised in Israel. Zoe will be sharing about herself, her own personal experience from this past year, and of course, the war efforts from YATAR’s perspective and more. It will be a "Bring-Your-Own-Dairy-Dinner" dinner and the program will be followed by dessert provided by AJ.

Adath Jeshurun — High Holiday Services 2024 – 5784

Stay and listen, stay and pray, stay and play.

We welcome young children and their families to our High Holiday services. We have spaces for you to step out of the pews when you need a short break. In the back of the sanctuary you'll find a family corner with a bin of books and small toys. We've also created a new family space adjacent to the main lobby. This space is designed to give families with young children a place to stretch or take a break without going far from the sanctuary. We welcome your joy and encourage you to come to services with your whole family this year! We can’t do this without you!

Upcoming Opportunities for Tikkun Olam

September 18 through October 4: Toiletry Drive. AJ Acts, our Social Action Committee, will be collecting sanitary products, diapers, wipes, and grooming supplies like combs, brushes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo/conditioner, deodorant, etc. for Mitzvah Circle. A collection bin will be in the lower lobby.

September 30 through October 28: Federation Mitzvah Grocery Gift Card Drive. You can purchase grocery store gift cards to be distributed directly to clients of the Mitzvah Food Program so they can purchase items they need from their local grocery store. October 15 through October 22: Helen F. Fox Fall Clothing Drive. Bring your gently used clothing, linens, and shoes (shoes tied together) to AJ! Bins will be on the lower level of the synagogue. Items will be donated to Purple Heart.

October 28: Fall Blood Drive. Perform a potentially life-saving mitzvah by donating blood at AJ between 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM. Please consider being a donor; the supplies are low while the need remains high. To schedule an appointment, go to www.redcrossblood.org/. ***The Red Cross is looking for high school and college student leaders to organize blood drives on their campuses between December 15, 2024 and January 15, 2025. Do you know an extraordinary adult?

Nominate them for the Wexner Heritage Program.

The Wexner Heritage Program will be coming back to Philadelphia in the summer of 2025. Thanks to the generosity of the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, in partnership with the Wexner Foundation, another group of outstanding volunteer leaders will benefit from this extraordinary two-year adult Jewish learning and leadership program. Ideal participants are approximately 30-45 years old and have demonstrated the capacity to be transformative leaders in their communities and beyond. They are seeking candidates from all sectors of the Jewish community, representing a broad range of community affiliations, volunteer positions, denominations, and identities. Nominations will be open until November 1, 2024. You can find out more here.

The Cheltenham School District is looking for tutors to help students with basic skills in all subjects. Over the pandemic, many students lost a good amount of academics and are in need of additional support. Tutors should be 16 years and older.
