IMPORTANT: NEW CELL PHONE POLICY IN FORCE MONDAY, APRIL 3
After careful consideration of the amount of instructional time being lost and conflicts arising because of cell phones, beginning after Spring Break, Jefferson will be updating the cell phone policy. Please, be sure to read the full policy here and have a discussion about this with your student, especially if you know they might struggle with not having access to their phone all day. To share some highlights of the policy:
Starting after Spring Break, students will be required to keep their cell phone in their locker or to turn it in with a trusted adult at the beginning of the school day.
If a student is found with their cell phone during the day, they will be asked to give it to a staff member who will lock it up in a secure location until the end of the school day.
If the student does not turn over their cell phone to the initial staff person, another staff person will be called. In this scenario, the cell phone will be secured and parents/guardians will need to pick up the phone at the end of the day. Staff will communicate with families to work out details in these situations.
Again, please review the full policy with your scholar so that they are ready to follow the policy upon returning to school from Spring Break. Help your student understand the importance of keeping their phone in their lockers and if a staff member asks them for their phone, it is best if they give it to the first person who asks them. The students have had the new policy shared with them in their classes using these slides. They have also spent some time practicing giving their phone to staff. Thank you for the continued teamwork in supporting your child!

There has been an increase in fast food and door dash deliveries coming to Jefferson for students. Student food deliveries are not permitted as this is a school safety risk, with students opening up doors for deliveries. We ask for your cooperation and that you speak with your child about this safety hazard.

Jefferson Bike Club
What? MSCR after-school bike club will be starting up after spring break. Students will learn basic bike fit and handling, safe riding on streets, and route planning.
When? The plan is to ride on Tuesdays, with Thursdays being a backup day if the weather interferes.

How? Students will need their own bikes, helmets, and locks. If you do not have a bike and would like to earn one, Wheels for Winners can help. With 15 hours of community service, they will provide a bike, helmet, and lock to students for free! I can help students brainstorm volunteer ideas, including helping around the school.
Summer camp biking opportunities through the Bike Federation of Wisconsin:
June camp for rising 5th & 6th graders: Adventure Bike Camp This camp is geared towards students new to biking independently.
August camp for rising 6th, 7th, and 8th graders: Adventure Bike Camp This camp is geared towards students with experience biking who are ready to ride for longer times and distances.

Some of our 6th-grade boys recently participated in a boys' group with Alan Chancellor, program leader of the Dane County Neighborhood Intervention Program. Guest speakers included DJ and author Martinez White and MPD Chief of Police Shon Barnes. Students are learning to build and strengthen positive relationships at school, learn healthy ways to understand and manage emotions, and develop and/or improve problem-solving skills. We are so proud of our young men for participating in this program.
Algunos de nuestros niños de sexto grado participaron recientemente en un grupo de niños con Alan Chancellor, líder del Programa de Intervención Vecinal del Condado de Dane.
