I hope all is well! I Have some weekly updates and I'm so sorry for not keeping you guys updated as well as I should but everything is going good so far. I'm sorry that we were not able to get Tennis up and running. I had a little trouble getting a coach but hopefully next year it will be better. I will be having an end of the year trip to Mt. Olympus and an end of the year school dance for the 8th graders. The MSCR Program will officially end May 25th. I would love to get any feedback from families since this is my first year and I want to make it better for next school year. Let's finish off the year strong!

On Saturday, May 6, Jefferson hosted the Lt Wayne Strong Spelling Bee. Lt Strong was a retired Madison police lieutenant who died suddenly last June at 62. Strong was the co-director of the Southside Raiders and was involved with the Urban League of Greater Madison, Overture Center for the Arts, Evident Change, the criminal justice program at Globe University, and UW-Madison's Center for Law, Society, and Justice. He was on boards of many organizations. In the last year of his life, he joined the Wisconsin State Journal's Editorial Board as part of the inaugural class of local community members.
The spelling bee was organized by Shannon Blackamore, Madison police captain of Community Outreach and president of the Capitol City Chapter, and Dane County Sheriff Lt. Jonathan Triggs, the chapter's vice president, who both saw Strong as a mentor.
The spelling bee, started by the statewide Capitol City Chapter of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement, was open to Jefferson, O'Keeffe, Sennett, and Sherman middle school students. It is separate from the Madison All-City Spelling Bee and Badger State Spelling Bee sponsored by the Wisconsin State Journal.
Congratulations to the winner, Jefferson’s 7th grade Ava Kramer, who correctly spelled the word "assimilation! Ava also won the Jefferson spelling bee and came in 10th at the city bee.

Actualización AL-Jefferson

Advanced Learning Update
We have a lot to celebrate at Jefferson! Five Jefferson students- Andrew Cayton (8th), Ash Anderson-Jenkins (7th), Kylie Baumbach (6th), Srijoni Nag (6th), and Julian Straub (6th)- had books published through NaNoWriMo. They celebrated at a publication party with donuts and friends.
Also, teacher-nominated sixth graders attended the MMSD STEAM Fair at UW-Madison. During 4th Quarter, AL teacher Mrs. Stohler partnered with Ms. Franze to co-teach a 7th grade Humanities unit on Document-Based Inquiry. Students chose a topic to study and researched it using four types of texts: an article, a 1st person or primary source account, a piece of art, and a choice. Students chose a wide range of topics including Victorian mummy unwrapping parties, Black hair, the Norwegian Butter Crisis, the French Revolution, memory loss, and the Opium Wars. Students will culminate the unit by creating a project to share what they learned
Increasing co-teaching and co-planning is a goal of the AL Department intended to expand all students’ access to a rigorous curriculum that increases critical and creative thinking.
Summer is a great time to extend learning. If your child is looking for something to read, you might check out NPR’s 100 Must-Reads for 9-14 Year Olds. You might also encourage them to stretch a bit in terms of reading by trying out books with a Lexile above 1000. Imagination Soup has a terrific list by genre. Another fun activity (especially on a rainy day) could be working on geography using seterra.com.

Congratulations, 8th-grade students and families!
The end of the year is quickly approaching, and our 8th graders are getting ready to move across the parking lot to Memorial! Here is some general information about the end of the year for 8th graders and their families.
Wednesday, June 7th: 8th grade field trip to Mt. Olympus in the Dells
Permission slips are attached and due on May 31st.
We will be reminding students frequently that the school rules will remain in effect while at Mt. Olympus, so their behavior at the end of the year field trip could affect their participation in the promotion ceremony. Please remind them of this at home as well! Thank you in advance!
Thursday, June 8th: 8th Grade Promotion Ceremony
9:00 am - 8th graders arrive at normal time and report to their homerooms to go over expectations for the day
9:30 - 10:30 am - PTO is providing a buffet-style breakfast for 8th graders and immediate family (siblings and guardians only)
11:00 am - promotion ceremony begins in Memorial’s gym (enter through field house doors)
Balloons, noise makers, signs, and other decor will not be allowed into the gym (there will be a place outside of the gym to store these things during the ceremony)
Cake reception after the ceremony in the Memorial cafeteria. Students are then welcome to go home with their families to celebrate!

Health Office News
Time to Schedule Immunizations!
Beginning in the 23-24 school year, Wisconsin Department of Health Services is changing the grade the Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis vaccine) is required from the start of sixth grade to the start of seventh grade; this change is to better align with the recommended age (age 11) at which children should receive the vaccine.

Madison Promise Online Program 2023-2024
Madison Promise Online Program is gearing up for the 2023-2024 school year application window. We will serve students in grades 4-11 (adding 11th grade) for the next academic year. We continue to learn a lot as we create an online experience that will support students/families seeking an online option. As part of our learning, we will have two windows of opportunity for scholars and parents to submit applications. The first application window will be April 17-May 19.
Students will continue to enroll/register at their home school, and Madison Promise will be listed as their secondary enrollment. It is important to remember that based on DPI enrollment policies, students who are open-enrolled in MMSD will not be able to participate in the online program via MMSD.
To support families, we will host family Q & A sessions on Wednesday, April 19, and May 3rd at 11:30 and 4:30 on both days. Families can complete this form to select and receive the Zoom link for their selected meeting.
Additional information, including the application, course information, Q&A session links, and frequently asked questions, will be housed on the updated website. Students and families can email promise@madison.k12.wi.us with any additional questions or concerns.

The Vel Phillips Memorial Girls Basketball program is once again offering our summer camp opportunity for girls in grades K-8. We will be holding our camp this year at Chavez Elementary School due to the construction and renovations taking place at Memorial HS this summer. We are offering scholarships to those students who qualify for Free and Reduced Lunch. Attached is a flyer with details on the camp, scholarships, and how to register.
Summer camp is designed for players at all skill levels, and is a great way for girls to get connected to our fall teams that range from grades 3-8.
