IFA Sinks Overtime Rule

In a major win for the franchise community last week, the IFA Law Center won its lawsuit against the burdensome Department of Labor (DOL) overtime rule in federal court.

Why it matters: The decision in the IFA-led lawsuit permanently vacates the rule, which would have saddled thousands of franchises with new compliance headaches and raised the salary threshold to nearly $60,000. IFA applauded the court’s action, which will have the effect of protecting jobs and providing more certainty for franchise owners to operate.

Haller Outlines 2025 Franchising Priorities

Last week, IFA President and CEO Matt Haller penned an op-ed in Entrepreneur outlining three ways the incoming Trump administration can support the franchising community in the years ahead.

Our thought bubble: Haller emphasized the importance of extending the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, updating the Franchise Rule and permanently enacting a commonsense joint employer standard to protect franchise businesses. Ahead of the new Administration and Congress, it is critical for policymakers to understand the priorities of America’s 800,000 franchise businesses.

IFA Fights Proposed Minneapolis Regulations

On November 14, the Minneapolis City Council passed the controversial Labor Standards Board (LSB) resolution on a 9-3 vote, sending it to Mayor Jacob Frey.

What’s next: The IFA-led Save Local Restaurants (SLR) coalition remains actively engaged with the Mayor’s office, key council members, and the Minneapolis business community to advocate for a veto, emphasizing concerns raised by small businesses about the prospect of sweeping new regulations and standards on businesses.

Zoom in: While passage was anticipated, two swing vote council members, whose votes are critical to sustaining a potential veto, expressed significant reservations, offering a potential path forward for the coalition. Mayor Frey has until Wednesday, November 27 to issue a veto.
