FORMATION & FELLOWSHIP

Join us Friday, January 31 for the first part of our celebration of Candlemas, which is the commemoration of Christ’s presentation at the Temple. We will gather in White Hall at 6 p.m. for a “low stakes” potluck dinner (make it, buy it or bring nothing - anything is fine!). We will then decorate luminaires to be used in our Sunday worship on February 2. This is an event and service for everyone so we hope you’ll join us. Contact Harper Bathel or Fr. Charles with questions. Please RSVP online so we have a good count for supplies!

The Feast of the Presentation (Candlemas) is kept on February 2. This year, because the 2nd falls on a Sunday, we will have a heightened celebration of the Holy Eucharist that will have exciting worship for all ages. Join us as we remember how Mary and Joseph presented Jesus in the temple, how Anna and Simeon recognized him as the promised messiah, and how Jesus was named as a light to enlighten the nations. As part of our celebration we will bless our church’s candles as well as the projects we created at the Candlemas potluck the Friday prior!

Confirmation is an opportunity to make an adult commitment to our Christian faith as outlined in the Baptismal Covenant, and Reception allows those who were confirmed in another Christian tradition to be formally received into the Episcopal Church. There is no "right" age to be confirmed, but at St. Andrew’s we believe that high school students (10th – 12th grade) or older is the appropriate time in life to learn more about Church history, theology, and practice and to discern whether it feels like an appropriate step in one's faith formation. Classes will be held at 9 am in White Hall on the first five Sundays in Lent (March 9, 16, 23, 30, and April 6) as we prepare for Bishop Susan Haynes visit on Sunday, June 15. To learn more or to sign up to be part of this offering, please e-mail Harper Bathel.

Our Women’s Intergenerational Bible Study meets on Thursdays at 7 pm in White Hall. All are welcome to join us. If you want to find out more, contact Ann Gwathmey (540-878-8332) or Cynthia Jones (757-332-4393).

Theology Before Lunch gathers on Zoom from 10:30-noon on Thursdays for wide-ranging, open-ended conversations on whatever comes up from reading books (quite slowly) together. This time the “book” will be from the Bible: First and Second Corinthians. Connie Jones is the moderator, and Deane Sobol holds the whole project together. To join you need to contact Deane so that she can send you a Zoom invitation.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

William Mayom has experienced much suffering and encountered unimaginable horrors since age 7 in 1987 when he fled from war atrocities following an attack on his village in South Sudan. He was part of the group known as the "Lost Boys" who spent years on thousand mile treks through the desert before coming to the US. Approximately 18 years later his mother was located in a refugee camp in Kenya. She recently passed and William would like to return to the village where she is buried and honor her with a Celebration of Life. The journey requiring travel by plane and bus is very costly. You can support his trip and the Celebration of Life with a donation check made payable to St Andrews Church, notation Mayom’s Journey. Should you like additional information please contact Pat Hodge at 757-679-5556.

Come visit the Church Mouse for Valentine's Day. We have Valentine door wreaths and remembrance gifts to give to family, friends, or co-workers. We are also having a sale on items that would make lovely gifts to others: a lovely quilted blanket, a Fair Isles hand-knitted hat, a brand-new Smore's kit with all the pieces to have Smores at your table for dessert - no campfire needed! So come visit - you never know what you may find.

WINTER EMERGENCY SHELTER

St. Andrew’s will be hosting an overnight shelter (for homeless men and women from Feb. 2-9. We will have up to 55 guests sleeping on the floor in White Hall. The shelter will continue Feb 9-16 at St. Andrew's but will be hosted and staffed by our friends from Christ and St. Luke's.

We are still collecting items to be distributed to our guests: Knitted caps, Gloves (L&XL), White gym socks (new), Toiletry items (travel sizes) – shampoo, soap, combs, etc. You can leave any donated items in the basket outside of the parish office.

Children’s Chapel at 10:15 a.m. in Auditorium: (ages 4- 10) Kids are invited to gather for a simple kid friendly offering which will explore our worship service. This week our kids will focus on the story of Lost Sheep is Safe (Luke 15: 6b). When you arrive, come to the Auditorium. Children will be brought back to their families in church after the Peace.

Children of all ages are welcome at 9 a.m. Then our Nursery (infants to age 4) begins at 10 a.m. For each offering, your child’s time will include play inside and out, faith-based activities, prayer, coloring, and a simple snack.
