National Market Summary: |
|
Jefferson City, MO Fri Feb. 7, 2014 USDA-MO Dept of Ag Market News
Compared to last week, not enough reported sales to establish a market.
Other than a handful of sales early in the week, marketing of cattle was at
a standstill. Snow, ice, winds, and record setting low temperatures made it
extremely difficult to move cattle off the farm. Producers had plenty to deal
with this week as feeding requirements were at a high, with subzero
temperatures, high winds and drifting snow taking a toll on man, beast and
equipment. Some cattlemen are also starting to calve and no one who has spent
a day in several inches of blowing snow checking for new momma cows and making
sure the babes are warm and nursing will debate the difficulty of that task.
Not stalled due to weather, but slow to develop, feedlot trade seems to be
waiting till the last hours of the week to take place. Choice boxed beef cut
outs started the year at 200.55 and climbed for the next 20 days peaking at
240.05 on Jan 22nd. Since that time they have reversed at nearly the same
rate closing on Thursday at 213.51. Trade seems to be easier for feedlot
managers and packers to agree on for finished cattle when the market is
climbing than when it is on the down slide. Supply factors remain supportive
of all sectors of the industry so it may be just a case of an overbought
market and some price correction. There are no doubts however that once
prices get too high, demand at the meat counter will fall, with only time
to tell what that price is and when we will get there.
