City of Hillsboro Hosts Youth Invasion
Last Thursday, October 23, more than 250 high school students descended upon the Hillsboro Civic Center for the 2nd Annual Youth Invasion-an event designed to give students an inside look at careers in public service.  Coordinating the event was a joint effort of the City of Hillsboro, Youth Advisory Council, Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce School-to-Work program, and the counseling staff at our high schools.  Mayor Jerry Willey and City Manager Michael Brown welcomed the students, and then turned the microphone over to inspirational speaker Tavish Ledesma.  Next, students rotated through three sessions of their choosing to learn about careers ranging from City Planner to Firefighter to Journeyman Electrician and much more.  Here, Liberty students Erendira Villagomez Almazan, Natasha Torres and Nadia Thomas pose with Hillsboro Police Officer Scott Hanley.  By all accounts it was a great day!

THOUGHTEXCHANGE STAR STEP BEGINS TODAY
Please participate in step two of our input gathering process

Many thanks to everyone who took the time to participate in the Share step of our recent Thoughtexchange process. We collected 8,269 thoughts from 2,178 people! Not bad for our first time.

Now, we are beginning the Star step of the process, in which participants will review the thoughts submitted by themselves and others, and assign stars to the ones that best align with their own thinking.Thoughtexchange's software assures that all thoughts are reviewed, however not all thoughts are reviewed by all participants. Each participant will view a maximum of 27 thoughts per each of the three questions that were asked; these will appear 9 to a screen, and participants will have up to 7 stars per screen to assign to their favorite thoughts.

Even if you didn't submit thoughts in the Share step, you are invited to participate in the Star step! The more input the better. Click here to read more.

HALLOWEEN SAFETY
For many families, October 31 is an exciting time when children dress as their favorite character or spooky creature and head out to the streets for trick-or-treating.  We urge parents to discuss the importance of safety with their children. Please see the recent article in the Hillsboro Tribune for some helpful safety tips.

If you'd like to skip the house-to-house trick-or-treating, the Orenco Station businesses are welcoming your little princesses, goblins or superheroes from 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. for their Second Annual Spooktacular and the annual Safe N' Sane Halloween event will take place at local downtown businesses on Main Street between Second and Fourth Avenues from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m.
LINCOLN STREET AND
W.L. HENRY EXPERIENCE SIGNIFICANT GROWTH

IN 2013-14

Overall performance in both schools improved in Reading, Mathematics and Science

On October 9, we discussed highlights and key data points from Hillsboro School District's state report cards for 2013-14. Now, we'd like to call special attention to the performance of our two Level 1 schools from 2012-13-Lincoln Street and W.L. Henry. The student populations at these schools are among the most highly impacted in our District, with a significant proportion needing to attain more than one year's growth to be achieving at grade level academically. However, with an investment of additional funds from the School Board, both schools were able to provide additional time and support to staff and students that resulted in large gains in all of the tested categories.  Click here to read more.

BOARD TAKES
TECHNOLOGY FIELD TRIP

On Wednesday, October 22, five members of the School Board joined staff to visit three of our schools and see how they're using technology in the classroom. The first stop was Hilhi, where the Board observed students in James Neville's IB History of the Americas 2 class and in Joe Painter's Algebra I class; the second was Free Orchards, where they visited Holly Haskell's ERC classroom and Kayla Dessert's 6th grade classroom; and the final was Evergreen Middle School, where they dropped in on Josiah Cotton's 7th grade Math class and Kevin Kottkey's 7th grade Science class. These teachers and many more are using technology to enable things like research, presentations, flipped classrooms, the creation of virtual museums, and much more to engage students and enhance their learning.

Board members Janeen Sollman and Glenn Miller talk to Hilhi IB History students about how access to iPads and an AppleTV is changing the experience in their classroom.
