As election results came in last week, all eyes in the Racine area were focused on the referendum from the Racine Unified School District, asking property taxpayers to approve $1 billion in debt and tax increases for their schools. To put this into perspective; there were 57 referenda in total statewide totaling $1.6 billion. $1.1 billion of that came from just one school district.

The referendum passed by only five votes, 16,748 yes, 16,743 no.

On Saturday, a recount commenced by hand, since there were no "blank memory cards" available for the recount.

As of the first day, the margin had been whittled down to just three votes. The recount continued this morning at 8:30AM and is expected to wrap up by the end of the week.
