Celebrating Black History Month

Black History Month celebrates Black American stories while uplifting joy, strength, resistance and justice. Systemic racism permeates every aspect of American life, including our schools and health care. This newsletter highlights just some of the resources that showcase contributions from Black Americans as well as resources to teach and learn.
Resources
Affirming Black Lives without Inducing Trauma
Learning for Justice has collected some resources/articles discussing how to engage with students to discuss white supremacist systems without traumatizing Black students and with extra care for their mental health.
Mental Health America: Curated Resources
This is a non-exhaustive list highlighting Black and African American contributions to the mental health movement.
Learning about the history of systemic racism during Black History Month* - and all year - in the mental health system and movement and how it harms Black communities in the US and around the world is key for creating a mentally healthier world.
Center for Racial Justice in Education: Curated Resources
As we enter February, Border Crossers is providing resources to be used beyond the scope of this one-month. Unless Black history is taught throughout the year, it perpetuates an “othering” of Black Lives and Black students, and is also a manifestation of anti-blackness. Ensuring the ongoing integration of Black history and experiences throughout all curriculum is imperative as educators continue to uplift every student and reinforce that Black Lives Matter everyday.
Ring the Alarm: The Crisis of Black Youth Suicide in America
This report developed by the Congressional Black Caucus provides an overview of the problem, as well as resources for families and professionals.
