Managing Food Allergies in Schools

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 8% of children have a food allergy, or about 2 students in each classroom. Allergies can cause major health issues, and there is no cure for them. School health partners can help develop plans and awareness to make sure the students are receiving the appropriate care. The resources highlighted below offer some insight into the scope of the issue and how to raise awareness and offer support.

published Voluntary Guidelines for Managing Food Allergies
in Schools and Early Care and Education Programs, to help schools
manage the risk of food allergies and severe allergic reactions
in students. 
Allergies and Anaphylaxis
Many of the resources on this page have been developed by the Epinephrine Policies and Protocols Workgroup, a collaboration of representatives of the National Association of School Nurses (NASN), the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the National Association of State School Nurse Consultants and sponsored by Mylan; some materials and programming was supported by Pfizer; and other materials were compiled by NASN staff.
Managing Food Allergies at School
To prepare for each school year, Kids With Food Allergies (KFA) recommends you follow certain steps. Make them part of your annual school routine. You may not need to follow each step every year as your child gets older and learns to self-manage their food allergy. Use these steps as a guide as you work with your child’s school.
