Rosh Hashana Mesage

“Dip the apple in honey…”

A fellow from Eretz Yisroel came to the Kollel last week and shared a beautiful idea from his rebbe, Rav Tzvi Meir Silverberg, shlit”a. The well-known custom of dipping the apple in honey on Rosh Hashanah night is to foreshadow the New Year of 5787 with sweetness and goodness for us and our family. Rav Tzvi Meir offered another reason. As we begin a New Year we should look back at the past year as well, and try to focus on all the sweetness and goodness that Hashem bestowed upon us and our family in 5786. This way we can pause to thank Hashem for all His goodness to us, with the realization that all good and sweet things are decided in Heaven.

My illustrious Zeida, The Chasam Sofer, zt”l would compose niggunim/songs (compiled in a sefer he called “Shiras Moshe”) right after Yom Kippur. He explained that these songs of praise to Hashem came from his contemplation of all the goodness he received from Heaven the previous year. He expressed it through meaningful tunes and lyrics, singing Hashem’s praises. [He waited until after Yom Kippur because during Elul and through Yomim Noraim he was preoccupied with y’mei hadin and tending to his kehilla.] This is like the idea above, to not only ask for a good and sweet year, but to as well thank Hashem for all the good in the previous year.
