Mercy Students Embark on Le Grand Voyage to France

This summer, a group of 3rd- and 4th-year French students traveled with Madame Campbell to France for their first overseas adventure, Le Grand Voyage. The itinerary combined history, culture, and interactive experiences that brought the French language to life in meaningful ways.

The journey began in Normandy, where students walked the beaches of Omaha, Utah, and Juno, explored Pointe du Hoc, and reflected at the German military cemetery. At the American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer, Madame Campbell laid a wreath honoring the medics of World War II, a moment that left a lasting impression on the group.

In the Loire Valley, students toured the royal châteaux of Amboise and Chenonceau. A highlight was shopping at a local market using their French to buy food for a picnic along the Loire River.

As the group traveled toward Paris, they stopped at the stunning Chartres Cathedral and enjoyed biking through the gardens of Versailles along the Grand Canal. In Paris, students experienced the city’s landmarks—Notre Dame, the Louvre, and the Eiffel Tower. They also took part in a macaron-baking class with a French chef, speaking in French as they learned each step and proudly bringing their creations home. Their Paris stay ended with a crêpe dinner and a magical boat ride on the Seine, complete with the sparkling Eiffel Tower.

Heading south to Provence, students visited the Pont du Gard and the towns of Arles and Aix-en-Provence, where they participated in a painting lesson inspired by Cézanne’s Mont Sainte-Victoire. The trip concluded in Nice, where students biked through the city, swam in the Mediterranean, and created their own perfumes during a workshop in Èze.

Throughout the trip, students actively engaged in French culture while practicing the language in authentic settings—whether at markets, in cooking classes, or through conversations with locals. Madame Campbell expressed her pride in Mercy’s French students for embracing every opportunity with enthusiasm, curiosity, and confidence.

For more information about the French program at Mercy or future trips, contact Mme Campbell at jacampbell@mhsmi.org.
