Moving Forward into 2024

2023 was the year of moving forward. Actually, we started our Moving Forward process in 2022 with our church assessment and our vision summit. This set us in motion for a year of great change, all in pursuit of our mission to illuminate our community with God's grace as we lovingly accept, listen to, and serve all in the Spirit of Jesus.

ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL

NEW STUDY BEGINS JANUARY 7

“BEATITUDES FROM THE BACKSIDE”

BY J. ELLSWORTH KALAS

“When we start examining the Beatitudes we realize that in Jesus’ view, happiness (being blessed) is not something we get by pursuing it; indeed, almost the contrary. If we choose to live by the Beatitudes, we put ourselves into bondage to such things a poverty of spirit, purity of heart, and a readiness for persecution. Before we go any further, however, let me say that over the past twenty centuries a very great many people have found in these Beatitudes a depth of peace and joy beyond anything our common culture promotes and seeks. It is an attitude that demands a huge store of courage. It’s the kind of dependence the trapeze artist displays when he or she lets go of the bar and with no safety net awaiting, flies off into space, trusting.” : J. Ellsworth Kalas

On January 7 the Adult Sunday School class will begin a new study, “Beatitudes from the Backside” by J. Ellsworth Kalas. This book is available through Amazon, Abe Books, or your favorite book provider. The Adult SS class meets at 10:30 am each Sunday in the Parlor. For further information contact Jim McConnell.

IN OUR COMMUNITY

HELP AN ADULT LEARN ENGLISH

If volunteering is on your 2024 agenda, you will want to attend Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley’s tutor training workshop. It will be held from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, January 9, 11, 16, and 18 at the St. Charles Public Library.

If you know English, you can teach English to one of the 30 adults who are eager to learn. Volunteers do not need a teaching background or a second language to help. The workshop provides material and instruction so anyone can be successful.

Each volunteer will be matched with one adult learner. Volunteer tutors and their students meet for one hour each week at a time and public location that is convenient. Students say that the best volunteers are patient, listen, and give practical information.

For more information or to register, call 630-584-4428 or visit www.lvfv.org.
