THOSE WHO LOVE JESUS
The message from Jesus in Sunday's Gospel is one that is both remarkably simple and at the same time very difficult. Jesus tells his disciples "Those who love me will keep my word." It is a fairly clear proposition. We are to love God and to love our neighbor. That's what Jesus has been preaching throughout his earthly ministry and now it is on us to "do the deal."

THIS WEEK'S READINGS |
But we all know it isn't all that easy. It involves setting aside all manner of preconceived notions, a variety of worldly pleasures and preferences, and locating in our hearts a place of generosity that we can go to--and get to--before self-interest and self-protection kick in.
Jesus gave us the instrument to effect this generosity of heart. He said, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you." And just in case we were thinking that it was a benefit to ease our lives, he said, "I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid." Heavenly peace is what we are offered. It can help us through any situation as long as we strive always to follow Jesus' teaching and not submit to earthly values.

THIS WEEK'S HYMNS
1982 405 All things bright and beautiful
1982 537 Christ for the world we sing
LEVAS-II 109 What a friend we have in Jesus
1982 345 Savior, again to thy dear Name we raise
HYMN INFORMATION: Samuel Wolcott was the pastor of the Plymouth Congregational Church in Cleveland, Ohio when the local branch of the Young Men's Christian Association held a meeting in his church. As he listened to the speakers, Wolcott was inspired by a large banner with the theme of the event: "Christ for the World, and the World for Christ." Having served as a missionary, Wolcott knew the need that existed in other countries, but he also thought of America as part of the world that needed Christ. He later recounted, "It was on my way home from this service in 1869, walking alone through the streets, that I put together the four stanzas of the hymn." Though Wolcott wrote many hymn texts,
Christ for the world we sing is the only one remembered today. His words are usually coupled with a tune written one hundred years earlier by Italian opera composer Felice Giardini, who traveled widely and spent his final years in Russia. Though this tune has had various names in different denominations' hymnals, it is probably best known as "Moscow," referencing the city where Giardini died.
