The Week of November 16-22, 2021
|
|
Dear St. Paul’s Community,
This past Saturday, Mark Goodwin and I attended Diocesan Convention at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. A series of five webinars in the weeks leading up to the in-person event prepared us on issues from the budget to the work of the reparations committee. Most of the voting happened online, in the week leading up to Convention. There was a pre-convention Mid-Hudson regional webinar in late October as well.
So the work of Convention took up much of the month of October and the first part of November. The in-person meeting on Saturday was the first such event in two years. It was great to see people from other churches and parts of the diocese in real space and time! We heard addresses from the three bishops, had worship together, and bishops’ crosses were presented.
A major point of news from the day was that Bishop Dietsche called for the election of a bishop coadjutor, who will become the next diocesan bishop in 2 ½ years. I’m sure there will be more news about this in the next months, but in the meantime, we can appreciate the time we have left with Bp. Dietsche and how we have gotten through the worst of the pandemic under his leadership. As you can imagine, this news came with some tears, and lots of gratitude and appreciation.
There were several other resolutions passed online prior to the in-person meeting. These include a resolution to conduct a racial audit of the diocese, analogous to the audit done by the national church that did not include New York. We passed a resolution to begin to recognize Barbara Harris, the first Black woman and first woman bishop in the entire worldwide Anglican Communion, as a saint by the diocese. We passed a resolution to recognize Absalom Jones day as an official celebration of the diocese. We passed resolutions in support of trans and nonbinary people and against anti-Jewish readings of our scripture.
You can see the pre-convention webinars, bishops’ addresses, and resolutions here. It was a good day for the Church, and good for St. Paul’s to be in there and connected.
Next week is Thanksgiving. For anyone interested in making a little trip for worship, St. George’s will host the greater Newburgh Lutheran-Episcopal Thanksgiving service, Wednesday November 24 at 7:00 pm. For everyone traveling, cooking, or both, have a wonderful and safe holiday!
Rev. Mary

STEWARDSHIP
- I asked our young adults to speak about Stewardship and the meaning of St. Paul’s in their lives.
Alexis Plain responded with the following - she had planned to speak yesterday on Zoom but wasn’t able to get on. Here are her thoughts:
Stewardship is defined as “the handling or managing of a business.” But stewardship when it comes to this church is much more than that. Stewardship is about community. It’s about showing up to the dinners and showing your support through either getting food or volunteering. Stewardship is creative. It’s about thinking of new ideas that could help fundraise or help create advertisements. Stewardship is about showing up and being a part of things. It’s about attending not only church, but the events that are necessary to keep the church going, as well. It’s about helping out when you can. Stewardship is about debating at meetings. It’s about planning and discussing what’s best for the future. Stewardship is about finding your passion in the church and running with it. It’s about joining a committee that does all the tasks necessary for day-to-day. It’s about giving and sometimes, sacrificing.
Stewardship sometimes ends up being about sweating in the hot sun all day to help out at a yardsale or hand out water to runners. But no matter what part of stewardship you take part in or how much you give, you will always receive so much more. From stewardship and just being there, you laugh, you hear words of wisdom, words of affirmation, and sometimes even dance. From every event and activity I experienced through and with this church —and trust me, there’s been a lot— I’ve only ever taken more with me home than I brought. Whether it was an insane amount of kitchen supplies, some new amazing memories, or abs from laughing, every part I played in the stewardship of this church has been meaningful to both this community and myself. Stewardship not only keeps the church running but it keeps our sense of family running.
You can’t manage and handle a business on your own, so especially when it comes to our house of worship, it takes a community.
Thanks Alexis - you’ve enlightened all of us!!

Each September for the last 42 years I have been showing up asking you to donate one more time to the Dutchess County Interfaith Council's Crop Walk. Even with all the roller coaster parts of today's world, you once again stepped forward to say yes. It has always amazed me that at a season of so many holidays on the horizon and all the added stress of Covid, you never let me or the hungry down.. The 890$s that we were able to raise - with the diligence of our Deacon Julett and others efforts on our behalf (Pennsylvania, Florida, N & S Carolina) we will insure that someone will not go to bed hungry tonight.
The Crop Walk has been important to me for a long time; and I am eternally grateful and blessed that my Parish family has willingly helped me hold this 'banner' high all that time... Know and never doubt I will with God's grace be back September 2022 with the same plea; and stepping off with a grateful heart and all your prayers.
Remain Blessed... With Much Respect & Love.... Rose Marie

Last year the Vestry helped First Lutheran with their Thanksgiving Baskets. They are sponsoring baskets again this year and the vestry thought we’d open it up to the congregation. First Lutheran generously supports our Food Pantry. If you would like to participate, please make a bag containing the ingredients listed below along with $10 for the turkey. Bags of food should be brought to St. Paul’s by Sunday, Nov. 21. We will deliver them to First Lutheran. Please let someone on the Vestry know that you are participating. Many thanks. Bobbie Gordon

IN-PERSON SUNDAY SERVICES
As more and more people are getting vaccinated against COVID 19 the Bishop has eased some of the restrictions that have affected our worship. Given this the Vestry has decided that all services (10:00am), except for the second Sunday of the month, will be in person and will include singing. We also hope to be able to broadcast the in person service live on our YouTube channel.
The second Sunday of the month will be on Zoom (see below for Zoom link). This allows us to have the coffee hour discussions and to retain those parishioners who are able to only be with us remotely.
We hope to see you on Zoom on Sunday and in person whenever you can make it in.
