The week of April 29-May 5, 2019

SAUL BECOMES A BELIEVER
At St. Paul's the altar party and the choir enjoy a distinct advantage. For them there is a constant view of our wonderful "Conversion" window (except when they turn to the cross to recite the Creed). The bright cobalt blue and the rich red draw attention to this four panel masterpiece. The drama drawn directly from this week's reading from the Acts of the Apostles is wonderfully depicted in stained glass.

THIS WEEK'S READINGS |
The road to Damascus for Paul was a life-changing experience. His switch from a fierce opponent of the Christians to one of the converted was as dramatic as could be. He became the Christian correspondent for the early church, writing letters, epistles, to and from communities where people were finding faith in this Jesus who was resurrected on Easter. That Paul left his secure and influential position to join the ragtag and underground Jesus movement gave evidence to the genuineness of his conversion. His writing demonstrated the fervor of his faith.
Most of us have a conversion moment or conversion moments, times when we feel especially committed to our Christian faith and desirous of living into it more fully. Gaze at the conversion window and see if your faith isn't bolstered, your commitments reinforced.

THIS WEEK'S HYMNS
1982 492 Sing, ye faithful, sing with gladness
1982 417 This is the feast of victory for our God
1982 187 He is risen, he is risen!
1982 412 Earth and all stars, loud rushing planets
HYMN INFORMATION: The hymn
Earth and All Stars was written in 1964 for the ninetieth anniversary of St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. Since its publication it has attained great popularity and is now included in the hymnals of many denominations. The text, inspired by Psalms 96, 98, and 150, was written by Lutheran pastor Herbert Brokering, who wrote, "I tried to gather into a hymn of praise the many facets of life which emerge in the life of community. So there are the references to building, nature, learning, family, war, festivity. Seasons, emotions, death and resurrection, bread, wine, water, wind, sun, spirit... have made great impressions on my imagination." The tune was provided by David N. Johnson, a prominent American church musician and a fellow faculty member of Pastor Brokering's at St. Olaf.
