"Making friends while serving God"

The Week of May 27 - June 2, 2019

ASCENSION SERVICE THURSDAY

Jesus' ascension into heaven is celebrated every year 40 days after Easter. This year's Ascension service involving local Episcopal and Lutheran churches is being conducted at St. John's Lutheran Church, 40 Wilbur Boulevard at 7:30 pm.

The new minister at St. John's, Pastor Jeff Koenig, will officiate. The Rev. Deborah Magdalene of Zion Episcopal Church in Wappingers Falls will preach.  All are invited.

Wait, wait--we're not escaping
In Sunday's reading from the Acts of the Apostles the disciples are jailed because they relieved a slave girl of a spirit which allowed her to tell fortunes. The problem was that her owner depended on the income she generated for him, so he had the disciples arrested.

THIS WEEK'S READINGS

An earthquake hit while the disciples were in jail and the jailer saw the walls were crumbling and the bars broken loose. He was about to take his life out of fear for the punishment he would receive when the prisoners escaped. "Hold on," they said. They weren't going anywhere. The jailer was baptized and God's redeeming love was proclaimed.

This is but one of the examples of the powers of faith which the disciples carried into the world after Jesus' Ascension.

DEACON'S DOINGS

Hello St. Paul's family,

Since my ordination on May 11th have been a little busier. It was very important to me that I celebrate with you on May 12. This was the first time I was able to proclaim the Gospel as an ordained person. It was a pirit filled experience, and one of the duties of a deacon.   During the ummer, I will be giving back to my home parish, Christ Church, serving at St. Paul's, visiting other parishes to get connected, and observing other deacons in action.

During the past the past 9 months, you have been a wonderful support to me on my journey. I was asked to be St. Paul's liaison to Habitat for Humanity and coordinated a mini fundraiser during Lent. As long time supporter and a faithful community you contributed over $400 to Habitat of Dutchess County Faith Build. Thank you. Also, there will be other ways you will be invited to get involved. I will be enlisting your help.

St. Paul's is very involved in our community. I encourage you to invite your friends and family to join us in worship and community service.
Together we will spread the Good News to the world.

Blessings
Deacon Julett

PS:
Sunday May 19th was at Christ Church. This past Sunday I was visiting St.
Paul's, Spring Valley. I will be with you all June 2.

THIS WEEK'S HYMNS

1982                 450        All hail the power of Jesus' name

1982                               Beneath the cross of Jesus

1982                 510        Come, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove

1982                 493        O for a thousand tongues to sing

HYMN INFORMATION: All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name, first published in 1779, is often referred to as the "National Anthem of Christendom." English missionary Edward Perronet Scott, the author of this text, was in India in the late 1700s, on his way to visit a remote mountain tribe which had never heard the name of Christ. As he approached, he was suddenly surrounded by a savage band of warriors brandishing spears. Expecting a quick death, he pulled out his violin and began playing and singing this hymn in their native language. However, the natives were moved by his words and the music, and Scott spent the rest of his life ministering to these people. American hymn tune composer Oliver Holden's 1793 tune "Coronation" is most often used with this text in America, while different tunes are favored in other countries.
