MESSENGER
"Making friends while serving God"

The Week of July 1-7, 2019

The Kingdom of God has come near

Our Gospel this week relates Luke's version of the assignment given the disciples, the interpretation Jesus offered them of their prospective welcome, and their somewhat surprised and very joyful response when they returned.

Jesus' instructions were both encouraging and worrisome: "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. Go on your way. See, I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of wolves." His nuance was made clear soon enough when he  told   them, "(I)f anyone is there who shares in peace, your peace will   rest on that person; but if not, it will return to you." In other words,   some will accept their message, others will not.

THIS WEEK'S READINGS
But when an entire community dismisses their visit Jesus recommended that they clearly admonish the people, saying, "Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet, we wipe off in protest against you. Yet know this: the kingdom of God has come near." Clearly Jesus wanted his disciples to leave them with the clear message of the kingdom of God being close by.

This is the message for all of Jesus' disciples, including even Christians in the 21st Century. The Kingdom of God indeed has come near. We need to proclaim it and--don't forget--stop to appreciate it every day.

Reflecting the glory of God

Our altar is a modest reflection of the glory of God but also is a reflection of our very best efforts.  There is a spirit of joy and gratitude in serving on the altar Guild of St. Paul's Church.  The addition of flowers to our worship space only adds to this joy and gratitude.

St. Paul's invites you to make a gift toward Sunday flowers in memory of, in thanksgiving for or in honor of a person or event.  The addition of flowers to our worship space not only adds beauty to our altar and a proclamation of resurrection, but is truly a multifaceted gift. They serve also as a pastoral blessing to those who receive the flowers delivered to them after the service typically those in the hospital, nursing home or shut-in at home.  The donor's name and appropriate dedication are noted in the Sunday's bulletin. (Our tradition is that there are no flowers on the Altar during Advent or Lent.)

Please call the church office for cost information (845-452-8440), and leave a message for Rose Marie Proctor - Altar Guild Matron - with the date and if you have a specific kind of flower in mind. We will make our best effort to fulfill your request.

New pew cushions!

In church you will notice a new light in the nave, a brightness and warmth never before seen there!

Friday our new pew cushions were delivered and placed in the church. With the help of a grant from the New York Altar Guild and a Vestry commitment for fund raising the old, lumpy, dull brown cushions have been succeeded by these bright , new and comfortable replacements.

SCHOOL'S OUT & THE FOOD PANTRY NEEDS YOUR HELP!
During the summer months, our Food Pantry volunteers see an increase in demand from our neighbors in need. School is out, so children are eating more meals at home. Please bring non-perishable food with you when you come to church and place it in the large basket in the Narthax.

Items that are always needed are pancake mix and pancake syrup, tuna fish and mayonnaise, and beef stew. Anything you donate will be given away. Thank you!

       HELP WITH HOME REPAIRS
Rebuilding Together Dutchess County is an organization that helps those struggling to keep their homes up make small and large repairs. There is information in the waiting area outside the parish office with phone numbers to call. If you or someone you know is in need of such services, please make use of this information.
