The week of April 22-28, 2019

A helpful clarification
There are moments in the Bible when we are given a hand, an explanation. Sometimes it is for something pretty obscure. Sometimes it is for something painfully obvious. Usually there is a character in the story being read at the time who asks a question and gets an answer that clears things up for us. Sunday's Gospel is a prime example.

THIS WEEK'S READINGS |
Thomas heard that Jesus had appeared among the disciples once when Thomas was elsewhere. He refused to believe it unless he could touch Jesus' wounds, wounds received from being crucified. The next time the resurrected Jesus appeared among the disciples he told Thomas to go right ahead and touch the wounds. Pretty graphically he told him. Thomas then said,
"My Lord and my God!" The Bible does not say whether he took Jesus up on his offer or not.
This exchange, however, lets us know a couple of things. One is that it is ok to have doubts, to ask questions, to get clear. The other, obviously, is that Jesus' wounds were real enough for Thomas to be convinced and converted on the spot. Thanks goodness for Thomas! He provides us assurance that the improbable is real, that the resurrection took place, and that we, too, can proclaim Jesus our Lord and our God.

THIS WEEK'S HYMNS
1982 184 Christ the Lord is risen again
1982 209 We walk by faith and not by sight
1982 192 This joyful Eastertide
1982 205 Good Christians all, rejoice and sing
HYMN INFORMATION: While many hymns result from a later union of words and music from different sources and different times, sometimes the hymn writer and the composer work together to create a new hymn. George Ratcliffe Woodward was an Anglican priest who wrote much original religious verse and translations of earlier authors. Charles Wood was a prominent Anglican organist and composer, known mostly for his sacred music and remembered as a teacher of Ralph Vaughan Williams. In 1894, Woodward published "Carols for Easter and Ascension-tide," and though most of the texts were written to fit traditional melodies, the volume did contain one completely original hymn:
This joyful Eastertide, a collaboration between Woodward and Wood.
