THE WEEKLY MISSIVE

April 11, 2025

We Remember, We Celebrate, We Believe

Dear Friends -

At our liturgies this weekend, we will sing Marty Haugen’s “We Remember” as the gifts are brought forward and the altar is prepared. In Haugen’s song, the Church’s liturgical action is described as threefold: we remember, we celebrate, we believe. The Paschal Triduum, as the highpoint of our liturgical year, the liturgical event par excellence, embodies this paradigm.

Every liturgy calls us to remember, and this becomes especially vivid during the Triduum. Through powerful symbols, sacred signs, and ancient rituals, we recall the story of our salvation. More than any other time during the year, the celebrations of the Triduum invite us to remember who we are—and whose we are.

Throughout the celebrations spanning from the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday through Easter Sunday, we celebrate rituals observed only once a year: the washing of feet and Eucharistic procession on Holy Thursday; the veneration of the Cross on Good Friday; the blessing of fire and the sprinkling of holy water at the Easter Vigil. By firelight, in procession, through ancient and new songs, we proclaim the dying and rising of Christ—our hope and salvation.

Through this remembrance and celebration of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, we are also renewed in our faith. In entering fully into these mysteries, we affirm the power of God to conquer death. The symbols and rituals of the Triduum invite us to believe again in the risen Christ, the Way, the Truth, and the Life. This is particularly poignant to us as we struggle with the current political and economic climate along with the myriad injustices we face.

This sacred time—a mini liturgical season in itself—is an opportunity to pause from the chaos, anxieties, and regular routines to come together as a community to remember, to celebrate, and to affirm our belief.

Please see our bulletin and online Missive for information on events at the Paulist Center, including the full schedule of our Holy Week liturgies, flower donations, details about the 42nd annual auction, and more.

Wishing all of you a blessed and grace-filled Holy Week!

Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion

“Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!”

Palm or Passion Sunday, is the first day of Holy Week.

There are two Gospels proclaimed at today’s Mass. The first Gospel, proclaimed before the procession with palms, tells of Jesus’ triumphant entrance into Jerusalem. Riding on a borrowed colt, Jesus was hailed by the crowds as they blessed God and shouted “Hosanna!” This event is reported in each of the four Gospels. At the Liturgy of the Word, the events of Jesus’ passion are proclaimed in their entirety. In Lectionary Cycle C, we read the passion of Jesus as found in the Gospel of Luke.

The Paschal Triduum:

Holy Week at the Paulist Center

The word “TRIDUUM,” the celebration of the Lord’s passion, death, and rising, means “three days.” In the biblical keeping of time, great days of celebration begin on the evening before the feast. Thus, the Triduum begins on Holy Thursday evening and ends with the liturgical celebrations on Easter Sunday.

Because the celebration of the Paschal Triduum - in its entirety- is the most important liturgical expression of our common faith, please join us as we celebrate together as a community.

and

Many Thanks to John Domino

Deb Heimel, the Chair of the Pastoral Council and member of the Finance Committee has graciously accepted the role of “Interim Administrator” as the search committee continues to look for a permanent administrator for the Center. Deb will work up to 20 hours per week for us, in addition to holding her full time position as Senior Director of Finance at Tech Goes Home.

She brings with her a knowledge of finance, non-profit management as well as her experience as a dedicated member of the Center. As a past co-chair, Deb has knowledge of the annual auction, the Paulist Center’s major fundraiser. She also served as co-chair of our outreach committee for LGBTQ+ persons.

We are very grateful for Deb  sharing her wisdom, experience, and energy with us in this time of on-going transition.

John Domino will serve as Chair of the Pastoral Council  as Deb takes on this new role.

We are also grateful to John for stepping into this role.

THANK YOU To All Who Attended Saturday's

Hands Off Protest and Rally!

The federal government's recent actions threaten the most vulnerable among us and fly in the face of Catholic Social Teaching. One of our core values at the Paulist Center is that we embrace the Catholic Social Tradition and commit ourselves to act for justice and peace.

It is so important as Christian Catholics to stand up for immigrants, our environment, and the LGBTQ community!

If you would be interested in participating in further ways to stand up for justice during these trying times, please email

Chris O'Keeffe, cmokeeffe@gmail.com to be added to our email list.
