THE WEEKLY MISSIVE

November 22, 2024

Servant King

Dear Friends -

This weekend we celebrate The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, also known as Christ the King. It serves as a reminder that Christ's reign is eternal, even as governments change. After a painful election year in which women were viciously criticized, sexist/crude language became the norm, and misogyny loomed larger than we feared, this title can be triggering. More than ever, in the aftermath of the unfathomably painful political campaigns we just witnessed, we are reminded that language matters.  Words like king can connote "enforcer of oppression" and "abuser of power"...whether we like it or not!  It is more important than ever to remind ourselves that Jesus was a servant king or leader, a much different king than the title implies.

I found it particularly comforting to focus on one particular sentence of Jesus in this Sunday’s gospel: “Everyone who belongs to the truth, listens to my voice.”  Jesus’ truth was not about power, but about transforming people and nations. That took a whole different kind of power. This is the king with the power of life, including eternal life, and every encounter is life-affirming. Jesus’ kingdom is not of this world, not political or military. It is the peaceable kindom ("g" intentionally omitted) coming into the world through radical love and justice for the poor, exploited, and outcast. In this week before Thanksgiving, I am grateful for this community, especially the strong women in it, who remind me that we share truths with Jesus, our servant leader, who models radical love.

As we look to Advent which begins next weekend, please take a moment to read through the three inserts in this week's bulletin: our year-end financial summary and an Advent insert highlighting the Advent and Christmas happenings during December. Finally, included is a letter from Norm Gouin detailing ways to support our event on December 14 & 15, A Festival of Readings and Carols. Our beloved Jesse tree goes up in the Mary Alcove next weekend.

As always, many things are happening here at the Paulist Center. Please see the information below and in the bulletin including this Sunday's community coffee and a Friendsgiving on Sunday evening as well as our Thanksgiving Eve Liturgy on Weds at 7 pm.

Thank you for being on the journey with us. We are grateful to be on it with you.
