Black History Month

Pauli Murray lived one of the most remarkable lives of the twentieth century. S/he was the first Black person to earn a JSD (Doctor of the Science of Law) degree from Yale Law School, a founder of the National Organization for Women and the first Black person perceived as a woman to be ordained an Episcopal priest.

Pauli Murray’s legal arguments and interpretation of the U.S. Constitution were winning strategies for public school desegregation, women’s rights in the workplace, and an extension of rights to LGBTQ+ people based on Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

Pauli Murray crafted a broad vision of justice, equity, and human rights using words as their primary tool in the fight for liberation. Their vision for a just and equitable world is a beacon of hope during troubled times. Their social justice tactics, legal strategies, speeches, letters, books, sermons, and poetry are models for our ongoing activism aimed at dismantling the oppression s/he faced and we continue to face because of white supremacy.  ~https://www.paulimurraycenter.com

The Art of Neighboring

Forum on Sunday, February 23rd

Did you know that Americans are spending more time alone today than in any period in modern history? Some are saying it’s an “epidemic of loneliness”. It’s also being called “The Anti-Social Century”[i]. Either way, across all demographic groups our time socializing face-to-face is down 20% from 2003 to 2023... and for youth it’s down 40%![ii]

What does this mean?  How is it changing us? What does scripture offer as a source of wisdom to guide us?   As Bishop Loya implores us… what is one “small thing” that I can do?

Just in time for Lent! Our goal is for everyone to write down ONE Lenten practice that will change the way you interact with your “neighbors”. We will gather again after Lent to share our stories of how this one small Lenten practice made an impact on ourselves or others.

Please join us for this highly interactive and intergenerational forum on Sunday, February 23rd (please bring your teenagers!)

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner

March 4 @ 6:00 pm

The Cornerstone Endowment Committee invites everyone to a pancake dinner on Shrove Tuesday, March 4, at 6:00 pm. Food will be available until 7:00 pm. Please join us as we celebrate the evening before Lent begins!

There is no fee for the dinner but freewill donations are requested. This year any donations received will be given to the St. David’s and Trinity Youth to help with costs for their pilgrimage to Iceland. Your generosity is appreciated!

Fun Trivia:

  • The idea of eating pancakes on Shrove Tuesday is over 1,000 years old. It was a way of using up rich foods before the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday.
  • Before baking soda was invented cooks often used fresh snow as an ingredient as it helped the pancakes turn out light and fluffy.

Pilgrimage Silent Auction is LIVE!

Do you like art? Boat rides? Sporting events? Food? All of these items - and many more - are up for sale at the silent auction fundraiser. All proceeds will support Trinity and St. David's youth who are traveling to Iceland in July 2025 to experience the awe and wonder of God's creation while deepening their relationships to their faith and one another. Bidding is open now and will conclude at noon on March 2.

“Being Disciples”, by Rowan Williams… a short but powerful read

In 2024 St. David’s offered a “congregational” read of the book, “The Truth at the Heart of the Lie,” by James Carroll, which was read and discussed by over twenty parishioners. This year’s book, “Being Disciples—Essentials of the Christian Life,” by the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, is intended to be a community-forming read inviting contemplation, sharing of stories, and transformation through active listening.

Our third discussion will be tonight (February 20th) and will continue for the following next Thursday, February 27, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Kris Ferrario and Scott Clark will co-host the sessions and will develop questions for discussion. If you are planning to join this group, or have further questions, please contact Scott Clark.
