Black History Month
Black History in the Making
As Black History Month comes to a close, Black Christian leaders are calling on their churches to boycott corporations who have rolled back their DEI initiatives.
“The Rev. Jamal Bryant of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Stonecrest, Georgia, is leading one such boycott. He is urging Black Americans to stop shopping at Target and to sell their stock in the retailer for Lent, a 40-day period of prayer and fasting that this year lasts from March 5 to April 17.
Bryant told CNN he hopes at least 100,000 people will register for the ”Target Fast,”described on its website as a “spiritual act of resistance.” Participants are encouraged to purchase products from Black-owned businesses during this time.
He said the Minneapolis-based retailer has shown an “absence of conscience” by making pledges to the Black community after George Floyd’s murder in 2020 and then reversing them nearly five years later.”
“Bishop Reginald T. Jackson, a leader in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, urged the Black faith community to unite in opposing corporations that retreat from their commitments to diversity, equity, and inclusion.”
These economic boycotts are taking a page straight out of the civil rights movement, like the year long Montgomery Bus Boycott, starting in December of 1955.
How to Support
So what can we do in solidarity? Tomorrow, Friday, February 28th, is planned for a mass boycott, or ‘Economic Blackout’. “This boycott urges consumers to avoid patronizing major stores and restaurants, instead spending money at local businesses.”
And, this Lent, we can join in the spiritual act of resistance by signing up for the Target Fast, or avoiding other large retailers who have rolled back their DEI initiatives.
Much of this contains quotes from the following CNN article by Nicquel Terry Ellis and Eva McKend.

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner
March 4 @ 6:00 pm
The Cornerstone Endowment Committee invites everyone to a pancake dinner on Shrove Tuesday, March 4, at 6:00 pm. Food will be available until 7:00 pm. Please join us as we celebrate the evening before Lent begins!
There is no fee for the dinner but freewill donations are requested. This year any donations received will be given to the St. David’s and Trinity Youth to help with costs for their pilgrimage to Iceland. Your generosity is appreciated!
Fun Trivia:
- The idea of eating pancakes on Shrove Tuesday is over 1,000 years old. It was a way of using up rich foods before the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday.
- Before baking soda was invented cooks often used fresh snow as an ingredient as it helped the pancakes turn out light and fluffy.

“Being Disciples”, by Rowan Williams… a short but powerful read
In 2024 St. David’s offered a “congregational” read of the book, “The Truth at the Heart of the Lie,” by James Carroll, which was read and discussed by over twenty parishioners. This year’s book, “Being Disciples—Essentials of the Christian Life,” by the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, is intended to be a community-forming read inviting contemplation, sharing of stories, and transformation through active listening.
Our final discussion will be tonight (February 27th) from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Kris Ferrario and Scott Clark will co-host the sessions and will develop questions for discussion. If you are planning to join this group, or have further questions, please contact Scott Clark.

February Vestry Update
By David Niles, Senior Warden
The St. David's Vestry met for retreat the evening of February 21 and morning of February 22.
We began with prayer and a delicious dinner provided by Charity Harvala and some table talk questions to get to know each other better.
Next was Dwelling in the Word on a passage from Jeremiah that included a discussion of being the "faithful remnant".
We then reviewed Discernment Listening Guidelines that provide a framework and ground rules for how we discuss and deliberate, with the focus being that "The goal of spiritual discernment is to receive God’s guidance."
We set forth goals for our Vestry retreat, which were:
- Grounding in faith
- Building community
- Understanding our roles as leaders
- Learning about the work ahead
- Ground ourselves in our mission and vision
- Charting a course for 2025
We then oriented ourselves to the role of being a church leader by reviewing the Vestry Job Description and an article entitled "Top 10 Ways to Thrive as a Vestry Member."
We then reviewed the approach to Vestry Shepherding that was begun last year.
We then brainstormed goals for 2025 using the four ECMN priorities (Discipleship, Faithful Innovation, Justice, and Congregational Vitality), St. David's mission statement, welcome statement, and seven vision statements to guide our thinking.
The Friday evening portion closed with Compline.
On Saturday morning, the Vestry host guidelines for Sunday morning were reviewed.
Our Treasurer, Stephen Ferro, provided an overview of St. David's financial statements.
We worked to refine and organize the goals that had been developed the prior night.
We conducted the regular Vestry business for the month - approving the minutes and financials from January, accepting the quarterly endowment report, appointing new members to the Endowment Committee, reviewing the Rector's and Wardens' reports, and reflecting on gratitudes and recognitions for the prior month.
The retreat closed with Noonday prayer.
We look forward to sharing the Vestry's 2025 goals with the congregation when they are approved at the March meeting!

The 44th annual Minnesota FoodShare Month begins on March 1. The Minnesota FoodShare Program was started by the Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches.
Hunger continues to grow in Minnesota. Families struggle to feed themselves as food prices and food insecurity keeps rising. Subsequently, food shelf demand continues to soar.
In fact, in 2024 Minnesota had a record-breaking 9 million food shelf visits in 2024. That is up from the 2023 record of 7.5 million visits!
ICA is seeing record number of families visiting the food shelf. With over 1000 families visiting each month, the ICA food stock is in constant need of being replenished. Traditionally, spring is a time when contributions of food and financial support begin to decline. In response, ICA joins the hundreds of other food shelves in Minnesota to encourage contributions during March FoodShare Month. It’s the second most important time of the year for food and financial contributions.
You can make a difference by helping ICA collect 150,000 pounds of food and $250,000 during the month of March.
Current needs include:
Food Non-food
*cereal *wet pet food
*pasta *toilet paper
*mac & cheese *paper towels
*crackers *kleenex
*juice
*ramen
You can bring your gifts of food to church any March Sunday or drop them off at your convenience in one of the ICA baskets at the church entrances. If you wish to make a financial gift, you can drop a check made out to ICA in the Sunday collection plate or go to the ICA website icafoodshelf.org/donate. When you make a gift through ICA’s website, be sure to indicate you are a member of St. David’s.
Whatever way you choose to support ICA, please know it will make a difference to many. Thank you.
