From Toni Morrison's classic novel, Beloved:
When warm weather came, Baby Suggs, holy, followed by every black man, woman, and child who could make it through, took her great heart to the Clearing--a wide-open place cut deep in the woods nobody knew for what at the end of the path known only to deer and whoever cleared the land in the first place. In the heat of every Saturday afternoon, she sat in the clearing while the people waited among the trees.
After situating herself on a huge flat-sided rock, Baby Suggs bowed her head and prayed silently. The company watched her from the trees. They knew she was ready when she put her stick down. Then she shouted, 'Let the children come!' and they ran from the trees toward her.
'Let your mothers hear you laugh,' she told them, and the woods rang. The adults looked on and could not help smiling.
Then 'Let the grown men come,' she shouted. They stepped out one by one from among the ringing trees.
'Let your wives and your children see you dance,' she told them, and groundlife shuddered under their feet.
Finally she called the women to her. 'Cry,' she told them. 'For the living and the dead. Just cry.' And without covering their eyes the women let loose.
It started that way: laughing children, dancing men, crying women and then it got mixed up. Women stopped crying and danced; men sat down and cried; children danced, women laughed, children cried until, exhausted and riven, all and each lay about the Clearing damp and gasping for breath. In the silence that followed, Baby Suggs, holy, offered up to them her great big heart.
She did not tell them to clean up their lives or go and sin no more. She did not tell them they were the blessed of the earth, its inheriting meek or its glorybound pure.
She told them that the only grace they could have was the grace they could imagine. That if they could not see it, they would not have it.
'Here,' she said, 'in this here place, we flesh; flesh that weeps, laughs; flesh that dances on bare feet in grass. Love it. Love it hard...”

Coffee Hour This Week!
Join us for a thought-provoking session as Huldah Niles, Diane Curley, and Becky Sweely lead us through an important presentation on affordable housing from Isaiah, a powerful multi-faith, multi-racial, and statewide non-partisan organization. Isaiah brings together a diverse coalition of congregations, mosques, barbershops, childcare centers, college groups, and individuals all working toward racial and economic justice in Minnesota.
This week, we’ll dive into the critical issue of affordable housing, something that affects us all—whether it's struggling with rising costs, grappling with racial disparities, or worrying about home stability. Many of us agree that everyone deserves a stable, affordable, and quality place to call home, regardless of skin color, zip code, or income. Unfortunately, Minnesota (and the entire country) has a long way to go in achieving that.
In this session, we’ll:
- Look at the scale of the housing crisis
- Reflect on how housing costs and disparities impact each of us
- Understand the history and root causes of the housing situation
- Be inspired to work together toward real solutions
Don't let the scale of the issue overwhelm you! Let's gather together and take meaningful steps toward creating a better, more just housing system for all.

Join us for Safe Church Training!
Safe Church Training: Level 1
On Sunday, February 16th during our forum time, our children and youth minister, Anna Belz-Brock, will be facilitating Level 1 Safe Church training. The training will start at 10:45am and go until 12:15pm. For those who stay for the entirety of the training, there will be a pizza lunch.
Safe Church is the standardized policy in the Episcopal Church for safeguarding the dignity of every human being. Safe Church policy requires all ministry leaders, paid church staff, keyholders, and anyone who works with children, youth, or vulnerable adults to complete levels of Safe Church training.
Level 1 training is the baseline requirement for all of the above, and highly recommended for all members of the parish. Safe Church training needs to be renewed every 3 years.
Please come join us! Youth are encouraged to attend as well, especially youth leaders.
If you have any questions about Safe Church, or think you may need further training, please feel free to reach out to Anna abrock@stdavidsparish.org and she get you signed up for the online modules.

“Being Disciples”, by Rowan Williams… a short but powerful read
In 2024 St. David’s offered a “congregational” read of the book, “The Truth at the Heart of the Lie,” by James Carroll, which was read and discussed by over twenty parishioners. This year’s book, “Being Disciples—Essentials of the Christian Life,” by the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, is intended to be a community-forming read inviting contemplation, sharing of stories, and transformation through active listening.
Our first discussion will be tonight (February 6th) and will continue for the following three Thursday nights from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Kris Ferrario and Scott Clark will co-host the sessions and will develop questions for discussion. If you are planning to join this group, or have further questions, please contact Scott Clark.

Hats and Mittens Update
It looks like a real Minnesota winter is finally upon us, with very cold temps & snow predicted this weekend. Can you imagine what it must be like to be out in that kind of weather without a hat or mittens to help keep warm?
If you have some gently used hats, mittens or scarves at home or see some on sale, please think of donating to Hats & Mittens. They can be dropped off in the Hats & Mittens boxes, located at the two south church entrances. All sizes, infant to young adult, are appreciated.
Many thanks to all who have already generously donated a variety of warm items, including waterproof mittens & gloves, colorful scarves and some darling handknit infant caps.
