Pastors' Weekly Message: From Pastor Pat
“When you search for me, you will find me; if you seek me with all your heart,”
Jeremiah 29:13
Have you ever seen those three dimensional images where the longer you stare at them, the more you see? Where in one image you see both a tree and a human face? Usually one image is more easily detected than another. It is only after you invest your full attention that you are able to see all that the image offers.
Some of us are more familiar with the verses of Jeremiah that precede verse thirteen; verses which remind us God does have a plan for us, spoken to God’s people in the midst of a wilderness journey.
They are the words Jeremiah proclaims from God that assures us that not only is God with us, but there will be something beneficial, something we can add to our spiritual wardrobe that we will glean from this experience. For most of us, just knowing this might cause us to adopt a posture of waiting for God to show up.
But God invites us to look deep into our experience to “find” our Creator’s presence.
Just as we have to stare intently at those multi dimensional images to see all the image provides, so we have to search intently for the presence of God in the midst of life’s challenges and celebrations. We have to put on our “God glasses” the spiritual lenses that allow us to see beyond the obvious to God present with us. To look deeper than what is closest to us, to see God beside us. When we do that we are able to see the many ways God is and has been present. God has been with us all along!
Thanks be to God!
-- Pastor Pat

Through your generosity, St. Paul's makes the holidays brighter for local families. This year we're unable to offer grocery packages in person for Thanksgiving but we have a new way to provide food assistance with a personal touch. The Sunday School and Justice & Compassion teams invite YOU to take part in the Thanksgiving Card Challenge! Make or buy greeting cards then add a message of Thanksgiving good cheer - but don't seal that envelope! Drop the cards off or send them to St. Paul's where our team will add grocery store gift cards and then mail them out to local families whose resources are scarce. Cards need to be received by Nov. 13! Please read all the details on the Holiday Giving page (stpaulsk.org/service/holiday-giving) or contact Meg Baker (mbaker@stpaulsk.org).

We hope you'll take a moment to watch this discussion series about issues important to the life of the church. This month we feature a discussion with Pastor Kate, Pastor Pat, Chair Grey Emmons (Finance Committee Chair), and Bill Butz (in-coming Church Council Chair for 2021). It's no surprise that Covid-19 and other circumstances have altered the financial picture for churches nationwide and St. Paul's is no exception. But "Let's Talk About Money" is not a time to panic! It's an honest conversation meant to offer a transparent look at the financial picture of the church so our whole community can better understand our circumstances, trends, and efforts.

Scripture Reading for November 8, 2020
Joshua 24:14-25
14“Now therefore revere the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness; put away the gods that your ancestors served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. 15Now if you are unwilling to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served in the region beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”
16Then the people answered, “Far be it from us that we should forsake the LORD to serve other gods; 17for it is the LORD our God who brought us and our ancestors up from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and who did those great signs in our sight. He protected us along all the way that we went, and among all the peoples through whom we passed; 18and the LORD drove out before us all the peoples, the Amorites who lived in the land. Therefore we also will serve the LORD, for he is our God.”
19But Joshua said to the people, “You cannot serve the LORD, for he is a holy God. He is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions or your sins. 20If you forsake the LORD and serve foreign gods, then he will turn and do you harm, and consume you, after having done you good.” 21And the people said to Joshua, “No, we will serve the LORD!” 22Then Joshua said to the people, “You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen the LORD, to serve him.” And they said, “We are witnesses.” 23He said, “Then put away the foreign gods that are among you, and incline your hearts to the LORD, the God of Israel.” 24The people said to Joshua, “The LORD our God we will serve, and him we will obey.” 25So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and made statutes and ordinances for them at Shechem.
