Women’s History Month:
The Rev. Dr. Jeannette Piccard
One of the premier space scientists of the early 20th Century became the first woman ordained to the priesthood in the history of the Episcopal Church. Jeannette Piccard received her bachelor's degree at Bryn Mawr College in 1918 and went on to study organic chemistry at the University of Chicago, receiving her master's degree in 1919. That same year she met and married Jean Felix Piccard, who was teaching at the university. Between the two of them they led the earliest human explorations of outer space via high-altitude balloons. In 1934 she set the women’s world record for altitude, a record which endured until Sally Ride exceeded it in 1983.
On July 29, 1974 Jeannette Piccard was ordained a priest in Philadelphia at the Church of the Advocate. Three retired bishops ordained eleven women priests, cheered by a large congregation. Jeannette Piccard was the first of the women to be ordained that day, because at 79 she was the oldest, and because she was fulfilling an ambition she had had since she was 11 years old.
Jeannette’s extraordinary contributions to the history of women in the United States includes:
· The first licensed female balloon pilot in the U.S.
· The first woman to fly to the stratosphere
· Co-inventor of the stratospheric plastic balloon
· Consultant to NASA
· The first woman to be ordained an Episcopal priest in the U.S.
The photo above shows Fay Weld (The Rev. Guy Drake’s grandmother), Jeannette Piccard, and Jean Piccard at the Piccard family cabin on Lake Vermillion, about 1960.

Celtic Christianity Forums
Esther DeWaal says, “the Celtic approach to God opens up a world in which nothing is too common to be exalted, and nothing is so exalted that it cannot be made common.”
A group of St. David’s congregants, currently preparing for a Celtic Christian pilgrimage to Wales, have begun to delve into the rich works of Esther DeWaal and other Celtic writers as part of their preparation. These upcoming Sunday forums provide an opportunity for everyone to acquaint themselves with the foundations of this rich tradition. History, modern-day practices, music, and experiences from a past pilgrimage will guide us along a new way of experiencing our Christian faith. We invite you to mark your calendars for these Sunday Forum offerings:
March 16: Ireland Pilgrimage insights (The Rev. Katherine Lewis and the Rev. Cindy Hillger, Deacon from St. Martin's by the Lake)
March 23: New Voices in Celtic Sacred Music (Roger Stratton)
Other Upcoming Forums
March 30: Social time
April 6: Episcopal Church history
Kris Ferrario will lead a Forum on Sunday, April 6, for an exploration of the rich tradition of the Episcopal Church, of which St. David’s is a part. As a member of the global Anglican Communion, the Episcopal Church bridges the ancient and the modern—rooted in tradition, theology, and governance while actively engaging with contemporary social issues.

Invitation to a Spiritual Practice for Lent:
The Art of Neighboring
Did you know that Americans are spending more time alone today than in any period in modern history? Some are saying it’s an “epidemic of loneliness”. Across all demographic groups our time socializing face-to-face is down 20% from 2003 to 2023... and for youth it’s down 40% (Bureau of Labor Statistics)!
What does this mean? How is it changing us? What does scripture offer as a source of wisdom to guide us? As Bishop Loya implores us… what is one “small thing” that I can do?
Our invitation is for everyone to identify ONE Lenten practice that will change the way you interact with your “neighbors”. We will gather again after Lent to share our stories of how this one small Lenten practice made an impact on ourselves or others.

You’re Invited to Community Night!
Join us on Wednesday March 26, for a special Community Night filled with good food, great company, and meaningful service!
We’ll kick off the evening with a potluck meal, so bring a dish to share. Then, we’ll come together to assemble 100 survival kit bags for our unhoused neighbors. Each participant will have the opportunity to take a few bags to keep in their car, ready to offer to those in need.
We'll end the evening with singing and simple evening prayer in the sanctuary.
This is a simple yet impactful way to give back to our community while enjoying time together. We’d love for you to be part of it!

Offering for Migrant Support Fund

We collected $778 in donations and Rev. Katherine added $500 from the Rector's Discretionary fund, making our total St. David's offering $1278. Thank you for your generosity! This fund will provide critical support and assistance for ministries of welcome, care, and embrace for immigrants in the season to come.

Caroline’s Story
On a sunny December day, Caroline came to ICA for her first ever shopping appointment. Feeling a bit nervous, she was greeted by ICA staff member Katie, who offered to help her navigate the food shelf. “There are so many options! I can choose from all three sections? This will feed us for days! I’m already at $50 worth of food! This is to much,” Caroline exclaimed, her voice catching as she wiped away a tear. “I’m already meal planning in my head. This will be a week of feasting like we haven’t had for years.”
Thanks to 71 pounds of food, the countless volunteer and staff hours that make it all possible, and your support, Caroline was able to provide nourishing meals for her family while also catching up on bills.
To ensure ICA can continue to provide for neighbors like Caroline, ICA needs a significant community response. YOU can make a difference by helping ICA collect 150,000 pounds of food and $250,000 during the month of March.
Current needs include:
Food. Non-food
*cereal *wet pet food
*pasta *toilet paper
*mac & cheese *paper towels
*crackers *kleenex
*juice
*ramen
You can bring your gifts of food to church any March Sundayor drop them off at your convenience in one of the ICA baskets at the church entrances. If you wish to make a financial gift, you can drop a check made out to ICA in the Sunday collection plate or go to the ICA website: icafoodshelf.org/donate.
Be sure to indicate you are a member of St. David’s.
Whatever way you choose to support ICA, please know it will make a difference to many. Thank you.
