Every year around October and November, Hindus around the world celebrate Diwali, or Deepavali, a festival of lights that stretches back more than 2,500 years. Diwali 2023 starts Sunday, November 12. In India, the five-day celebration traditionally marks the biggest holiday of the year.
Like many Hindu festivals, there isn’t just one reason to celebrate the five-day holiday. The ancient celebration is linked to multiple stories in religious texts, and it’s impossible to say which came first, or how long ago Diwali started. Many of these stories are about the triumph of good over evil.

| Ask The Expert: The Real Thanksgiving Story |
We think we know what happened in 1621 — why Thanksgiving was held, how the Wampanoag were invited, what the Pilgrims ate – but first Thanksgiving facts, as most Americans have been taught in the years since, are not exactly accurate.
Learn more about the real Thanksgiving story, as shared by Brad Musquantamôsq Lopes (Aquinnah Wampanoag), Director of Wampanoag and Indigenous Interpretation and Training at Plimoth Patuxet Museums and Tom Begley, Deputy Director of Collections, Research, & Public Engagement at Plimoth Patuxet Museums. Together, Brad and Tom will offer historical and cultural perspectives related to the first Thanksgiving story and gratitude as a way of life for Indigenous Peoples.

Hartley & Parker Sales Division
is featuring Teresa Manara Chardonnay.
| |
Destiny arrives uninvited and never takes off its hat. Over the arc of our winery’s history, it actually happened twice. First, it took off its gloves and put down its suitcase in the form of a woman who recognized how a grand opera would emerge from the tiny voice of bulk wine in Southern Italy. Her name was Teresa Manara. She was the key that opened a door for a family’s passion. Thanks to Teresa, and her husband Giovanni Battista Cantele of course, that family became masters of the art of winemaking. Her spirit became the essence of all the vintages harvested by successive generations. As they took turns singing the various parts, they were the players in an opera that was produced so many times that it became a classic. Their mother earth was marked by seasons that blended into one another, just like all human life, with one fading into the next.
Teresa Manara isn’t just the name of a Chardonnay and a Negroamaro: Hers is the name of a before and after in our memories. It’s a loving homage to a woman, a mother, a wife, our muse and our grandmother. She traveled across Italy during a time when only men were allowed to run businesses. Today, her character and temperament are embodied by our top selections of Chardonnay and Negroamaro, wines that were created by her son Augusto Cantele in the 1990s.
The Teresa Manara Chardonnay is made from a top selection of Chardonnay grapes from our best vineyards. Only the highest-quality fruit goes into this barrique-aged wine.
Teresa Manara Chardonnay Intense straw yellow color with nuanced golden and green tones. Spicy aromas emerge immediately on the nose, giving way to a rainbow of overflowing floral and fruit aromas. Acacia and vine flowers together with local and exotic, ripe fruit. The palate is silky in the mouth, velvety and mellifluous, with freshness and sweet spices imparted by selected wood used during aging. The finish wins over the drinker with its length and its terroir expression.
|
Hartley & Parker Sales Division
is also featuring Pallini Limoncello.
|
Pallini Limoncello is a natural liqueur that has been crafted by the Pallini family in Italy since 1875. It is made from prized, Sfusato lemons, exclusive to the Amalfi coast. The handpicked lemons are infused immediately, so their freshness and flavor are delivered in every bottle. Its versatility is almost endless – enjoy it neat, on the rocks, straight from the fridge, or mixed into cocktails and food recipes. For a crisp and authentic taste of Italy, none can compare! GMO Free, Gluten Free, Kosher.
Its bright yellow color is a delightful reminder of the sun during summer and the delightful sensation of warm summer evenings: the sea’s cool breeze and its relaxed feeling. Limoncello is one of Italy’s most loved and treasured liqueurs for many reasons: its rich fresh citric taste, its history, and also because it is perfect for any occasion.

|
Horse Soldier Bourbon was founded in 2016 by John Koko, Elizabeth Pritchard-Koko, Scott Neil, and key retired members of the hand-selected detachment of Green Berets from the 5th Special Forces Group who were the first to enter Afghanistan on horseback weeks following the 9/11 terrorist attacks. This brave and unconventional act earned them the moniker of "Horse Soldiers," and their story was told (without their direct involvement) in the 2018 action-drama film "12 Strong."
Horse Soldier Bourbon is an authentic, all-American, award-winning, ultra-premium bourbon brand that is hand-crafted with a true sense of integrity, authenticity, and service. It is available in three permanent expressions: Straight Bourbon Whiskey, Small Batch Bourbon Whiskey, and Barrel Strength Bourbon Whiskey, all of which achieved Double Gold Medals.
| | The New York City Port Authority donated the steel recovered from the World Trade Center after 9/11. Each bottle of Horse Soldier is formed in molds of this steel to honor the spirit of resilience and service that arose after the attack on our nation. |

National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month | |
During November, National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness month aims at making the general public more aware of the disease and the scale of it among the U.S. population, as well as bring to light potential care options for those affected.
Facts About Alzheimer’s
Although Alzheimer’s affects approximately 1 in every 2 families in the U.S., there’s still quite a bit of information about Alzheimer’s that you might not be aware of.
Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia, a general term for memory loss and other cognitive abilities serious enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer’s disease accounts for 60 to 80 percent of dementia cases.
Alzheimer’s is not a normal part of aging. The greatest known risk factor is increasing age, and the majority of people with Alzheimer’s are 65 and older. But Alzheimer’s is not just a disease of old age. Approximately 200,000 Americans under the age of 65 have younger-onset Alzheimer’s disease (also known as early-onset Alzheimer’s).
Alzheimer’s worsens over time. Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease, where dementia symptoms gradually worsen over a number of years. In its early stages, memory loss is mild, but with late-stage Alzheimer’s, individuals lose the ability to carry on a conversation and respond to their environment. Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. Those with Alzheimer’s live an average of eight years after their symptoms become noticeable to others, but survival can range from four to 20 years, depending on age and other health conditions.
Alzheimer’s has no current cure, but treatments for symptoms are available and research continues. Although current Alzheimer’s treatments cannot stop Alzheimer’s from progressing, they can temporarily slow the worsening of dementia symptoms and improve quality of life for those with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers. Today, there is a worldwide effort under way to find better ways to treat the disease, delay its onset, and prevent it from developing.
Normal Memory Loss Or Alzheimer’s Disease/Dementia?
Although everyone’s brain changes as they age, it’s important to understand that Alzheimer’s disease is not a normal part of aging.
Memory loss is typically one of the first warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease, but occasionally forgetting words or names does not mean a person has Alzheimer’s. There are other signs that someone in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease may experience in addition to memory problems.
In the early stages of the disease, these can include:
• Getting lost in familiar places.
• Having trouble handling money and paying bills.
• Repeating questions.
• Taking longer to complete normal daily tasks.
• Displaying poor judgment.
• Losing things or misplacing them in odd places.
• Displaying mood and personality changes
