1969: Stonewall Uprising
On June 28, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a popular Greenwich Village nightclub, for the second time in a week — a common occurrence in an era when nearly all aspects of LGBTQ life were criminalized. That night, however, the crowd refused to disperse and patrons clashed with police as the confrontation swelled to include hundreds of demonstrators. Riots continued into the following week. The Stonewall uprising galvanized activists across the country and set into motion the modern LGBTQ movement.

1970: First Pride Parades
One year after Stonewall, people commemorated the uprising with marches in New York City, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles. The phrase “gay pride” was also brand-new that year, coined by activists as a shorthand to unite the events planned as part of the fledgling movement. In 1971, pride went worldwide, with parades and demonstrations taking place in West Berlin, London, Paris and Stockholm.
| Pride Month Spotlight: Theresa Heredia, Gary Farrell Winemaker | |
Winemaker Theresa Heredia, a third-generation Mexican American, joined the Gary Farrell team in 2012. As the former long-time winemaker at Joseph Phelps’ Freestone Vineyards on the Sonoma Coast, Theresa is a highly respected specialist in small lot, single vineyard Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Theresa has a keen appreciation for the acclaimed Gary Farrell Winery house style, which emphasizes elegance and balance. In early 2012, she was named “Winemaker to Watch” by the San Francisco Chronicle. She was also nominated for Winemaker of the Year in 2020 by Wine Enthusiast Magazine.
In an interview for Pride Month, Theresa shared her insights on diversity and inclusion in the wine industry, particularly the work that she has done in partnership with the Human Rights Campaign. “At Gary Farrell, we believe in a culture of diversity, equality and inclusiveness. We believe that the Human Rights Campaign is a wonderful organization to support because they fight for all types of equality. The winery has been working with HRC since 2015, but I have been a supporter since 2010. Over the years, we’ve either donated to or physically participated in many fundraising events… One of our main goals is to bring awareness and diversity not only to our winery, but to Sonoma County and the wine industry, as a whole,” she declared.
| National Caribbean-American Heritage Month | |
June is National Caribbean-American Heritage Month and was established to recognize the contributions of Caribbean people to the United States.
In June 2005, the House of Representatives unanimously adopted H. Con. Res. 71, sponsored by Congresswoman Barbara Lee, recognizing the significance of Caribbean people and their descendants in the history and culture of the United States. On February 14, 2006, the resolution similarly passed the Senate, culminating a two-year, bipartisan and bicameral effort. The Proclamation was issued by President George W. Bush on June 6, 2006.
Since the declaration, the White House has issued an annual proclamation recognizing June as Caribbean-American Heritage Month. This year marks the fourteenth celebration of June as National Caribbean-American Heritage Month.
The campaign to designate June as National Caribbean-American Heritage Month was spearheaded by Dr. Claire Nelson, Founder and President of the Institute of Caribbean Studies. Through the commemoration of this month, the hope is to ensure that America is reminded that its greatness lies in its diversity, with Caribbean immigrants from founding father Alexander Hamilton, to journalist Malcolm Gladwell, who have shaped the American dream.

June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month | |
This is an opportunity to hold a conversation about the brain, and share the fact that Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias are a major public health issue. Everyone who has a brain is at risk to develop Alzheimer’s, the only leading cause of death that cannot be prevented, cured or even slowed. During the month of June, the Alzheimer’s Association® asks people around the world to wear Purple and use their brains to fight Alzheimer’s disease.
Dementia is a brain condition that affects parts of the brain that control thought, memory, and language. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia. While the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease increases with age, Alzheimer’s disease is not considered a “normal” part of aging. Most people living with Alzheimer’s disease are older than 65 years; however, people younger than age 65 can develop Alzheimer’s disease (though it is not common.)
Normal Memory Loss – Or Alzheimer’s Disease/Dementia?
Although everyone’s brain changes as they age, it’s important to understand that Alzheimer’s disease is not a normal part of aging. Memory loss is typically one of the first warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease, but occasionally forgetting words or names does not mean a person has Alzheimer’s. There are other signs that someone in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease may experience in addition to memory problems.
In the early stages of the disease, these can include:
- Getting lost in familiar places
- Having trouble handling money and paying bills
- Repeating questions
- Taking longer to complete normal daily tasks
- Displaying poor judgment
- Losing things or misplacing them in odd places
- Displaying mood and personality changes
