Advent's Vision
We are Advent Lutheran Church.  As diverse children of God, we strive to be the embodiment of that which God wants all people on earth to be.  We love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength.  We love our neighbor as ourselves, and express this love in service to others.  By accepting God's gift of grace through our faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, we are reconciled to God forever.

New eNEWS format:
Beginning with this mailing, all new items will appear for one week under this new heading of NEW CHURCH NEWS.  After the first week they will move to the heading NEWS THAT IS REPEATING BUT RELEVANT.   The item will remain there until it is no longer relevant to us.   We hope this will help our readers instantly spot what is new news but at the same time, we want to encourage you to look at the older news in case you missed it the first week.   Thank you!

Church office closed Thursday, July 4, and Friday, July 5th.
Have a wonderful holiday!

It's Time ... a reminder for you
On July 1, Advent began a new fiscal year.   Many of you have made commitments to the Advent for Life (Plan of Ministry) and the Jubilee Capital campaign.

It is time to begin to fulfill those commitments to support our ministries and the many repairs and improvements needed for our facilities.

If you have thought about automating your gifts to the church but have not done so, this is a good time to make your giving effortless.  Please contact Claude Ingolia, Financial Secretary, at [email protected] to review your options and get started.

We say 'thank you' once again for your generosity which makes it possible for Advent to make Christ known through worship, spiritual development and ministry in our community.

Adventurer's July Lunch Outing
The Adventurer's July lunch outing will be at Macado's, just down the road from the church at 8650 University City Blvd.   Anyone can join us who is free on Thursday, July 18, 12 noon.   Contact Barb Blish ([email protected] or 1-703-431-0585) if you can come so she can get a headcount for seating.

Hope to see you there!

Summer Snack Time
The Food Pantry is asking for individual packs of chips and cheese cracker snacks for the month of July. We know this isn't the healthiest request, but sometimes a small snack other than fruit or veggies is what people crave. When there is a whole bag of chips, many have trouble limiting how much they consume. With a small pack, we are more likely to be satisfied with less. The convenience of these items is also much appreciated by those participating in Hit the Streets.

Thanks for thinking of all the hungry out there!

Church-owned cemetery plots available for purchase --- below market cost!!
For a number of years Advent has owned 2 cemetery plots at Sharon Memorial Park and 2 at Forest Lawn West.   These plots are available for purchase by any member or any contact through a member.   Details are listed below.   If you are interested or know someone who might be interested, please contact Pam Rhynes at [email protected], 704-532-0823 or the church office.

Two side-by-side plots at Sharon Memorial Park at Monroe and Sharon Amity Roads, located in the Gethsemane section which is closer to Monroe Road.   Value if purchased today would be over $2495 each or $4990 for both.   We are willing to sell them through the church for $795 each if sold individually or $1295 if sold together.   There is a $295 transfer fee that is built into these stated costs.

One double-deck lawn crypt at Forest Lawn West on Freedom Drive.   This is a single lot but holds the remains of two persons in individual coffins and vaults in double-deck fashion.  They are in the Court of Honor section.  Current cost if purchased today would be $5495 to $6995.  Advent's selling price is $1045.   There is also a $295 transfer fee built into this cost.

Summer Office Hours
Beginning the week of June 17th and continuing throughout the summer, the church office will be open 10 hours a day, Monday through Thursday.  The office will be closed on Fridays.

Church Air Conditioning
With the summer hot temperatures arriving early this year, so will the higher utility costs for the church.   Please be sure to return thermostats to the proper setting when leaving the building. This is especially important when using one of the classrooms heated or cooled by the remote-controlled wall units.   Leaving the air running is costly to us all!!

Prayer of the Day - Available on your Phone
If you are anything like me, your phone or email buzzes all day long. And if your messages are like mine, most of them are additions to a long to-do list with the occasional joke or funny meme. We are offering the opportunity to join together in daily prayer. If you would like to receive daily prayers on your phone, go to  Advent website under Worship & Music/Prayer of the Day OR
write/curate these prayers specifically for Advent with the intent of experiencing the joy of praying as a community.

Summer Reading Program
We have launched the summer reading program and thanks to many generous donors, we have lots of books to check out! You will find crates of books in the gathering space. We are using the honor system, so please just take one or two at a time and return them when you are finished.

MaryLou Kuklentz still has plenty of slots left to read with her dog McTavish. Hop on over to adventlu.org to find days/times. Remember to mark your calendar for the celebration at the end of the summer on August 2nd at 5:30 at our summer cookout.

Contact Carol Schierlmann at [email protected] for questions or donations.

Advent Podcast Update
The 3rd Radical Love podcast is now available.   This latest one includes Pastor Dick.   Please take some quiet time to listen to these messages that have been created as a labor of love from your SD and Worship Team.  You can find a link to the podcast on the website or you can access via ITunes or your podcast app on android phones. Feedback is welcome.

June: Quenching Thirst
In the hot summertime we all need to keep drinking lots of fluids to keep from dehydrating, and we don't want any of our neighbors to go thirsty. We'd like to stock our food pantry with Gatorade and flavored drink packets (to add to water bottles), as these items are also high on the list for the Charlotte Hit the Streets ministry supported by some of our members. Please add these items to your cart when you're loading up on cooling beverages!

Electronic 'Givers' Participate in Worship
So that all who give by an automated means can participate in worship, we are providing a special card in the pews that you can use when the offering plate is passed. Members are encouraged to take a moment to give thanks before placing the electronic giving card into the offering plate.
"Because we are designed in God's image, we are happiest and most fulfilled when serving and giving." - Dave Ramsey
