Advent's Vision

We are Advent Lutheran Church.  As diverse children of God, we strive to be the embodiment of that which God wants all people on earth to be.  We love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength.  We love our neighbor as ourselves, and express this love in service to others.  By accepting God's gift of grace through our faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, we are reconciled to God forever.

As our Chancel Choir, Grace Alive! and Advent Ringers take a well deserved break from weekly Wednesday rehearsals and learning new anthems, some groups will be continuing to rehearse over the summer.  If you can read music, we invite you to check us out this summer, and join us for summer singing, ringing  fun, and fellowship!  This is a short time commitment and offers the chance to be a part of the music program for the summer.  Please talk to Annette for more information.  We'd love to have you join us.

Summer Music Offerings Rehearsal Schedule:

Beginning June-August Men's Chorus will meet in the music room on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month from 9:45-10:15.  Whether you read the tenor, baritone or bass part, we welcome you to sing with us!  This group rehearses a mix of gospels,  traditional hymns, and contemporary Christian.

Beginning June-August Dolce, the Women's Chorus, will meet in the music room on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month from 9:45-10:15.  Whether you read first soprano (we need first sopranos!), second soprano, or alto, we welcome you to sing with us!  This group rehearses  mostly traditional pieces, but also includes a mix of contemporary Christian.

Advanced Bells will continue to meet on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month from 7:00pm-7:45pm.  If you read music easily and would like a challenging, fast paced ringing environment, show up in the music room. We welcome your participation and skills!

Open to all ringers and singers, regardless of proficiency levels:  Christmas in July!  Whether you can read music or not, please join Chancel Choir,  Grace Alive! and Advent Ringers for three special weeks of rehearsals in the music room on July 9, 16, and 23.

Advent Ringers will  meet  Wednesdays, 6:00-6:30pm, and the Combined Choirs will follow 7:00-8:00pm to prepare for Christmas in July anthems and preview Christmas Music for the coming Advent Season.  So much fun to sing and ring with these groups.  No experience required!

Nurture, Support & Fellowship

Do you have old costume jewelry taking up space?  The Advocacy Board is collecting used costume jewelry for the Community Craft Collective, a co-op sponsored by Luther Place Church in Washington DC.  The jewelry is repurposed by members of the co-op as new pieces of jewelry and sold to support members of the group.  Our DC mission team had opportunity to meet some of the members of the co-op and hear their stories of the healing and therapeutic value of their work together.  Our youth mission team will deliver the jewelry to Luther Place during their summer trip on June 22.  Please leave all donations in the bin in the Gathering Space.

KAIROS NEWS

DROP OFF COOKIES AT ADVENT BY NOON, MONDAY, JUNE 9!

First, on behalf of myself, Mark Baumann, Greg Francus, John Christ ,and Janet, as well as all past and future Kairos Teams, we would like to extend a heartfelt Thank You!!! for the Prayers, Cookies, and Financial Support for Foothills Correctional Institute, Kairos Inside #8.  While the team delivers the Love, everything that you do in support is recognized by each of the participants and the team.  As was shared by Pastor Ward, Pastor John, Greg and Pam during the Sunday Worship Service on the 10th of May, Kairos truly is God's Special Time.  Again... Thank You all.

This week kicks off Advent's Annual Kairos appeal.  While Foothills #8 is over, the Upcoming Avery/Mitchell Correctional Institute, Spruce Pine, Kairos Inside #1 (AMCI Kairos #1) will be held June 10th - 13th and Foothills #9 will be October 2nd - 5th.  There will be a Kairos Kiosk in the Gathering Space the next three Sunday's and we need your support.

FIRST: We ask for your prayers.  You can sign up for a specific time slot online at this link:

http://www.3dayol.org/Vigil/GetVigil.phtml?pvid=9591&commid=2040

There will also be a signup sheet on a Clip Board at the Kiosk.

SECOND: The team is small with only 29 total members but we still need to bring the some 5000 Dozen (60,000) Cookies to the Kairos.  There will be a COOKIE SIGN UP SHEET at the Kiosk also along with a Cookie Instruction Sheet.  Can you bake five or ten dozen cookies?

THIRD:  We need your financial support.  This Kairos will not be feeding meals to the participants but this is a brand new ministry and there are significant startup costs as well as supplies for the weekend, lodging and meals for the team.  Typically Kairos Teams "go in the hole" on the first two or three weekends.  You support can keep that from happening as well as helping with other Kairos Ministries here in North Carolina that have felt the pinch.  Additionally there will be a second Kairos Weekend in October that will need support this year.  Your check for $5, $10, $25 is a way for you to go to prison with us.  Make checks payable to Kairos of NC and place them in the collection plate.  Kairos NC is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3)charitable organization and you will be mailed a letter in January for tax purposes.

Again, thanks for your past and future support as Kairos brings Christ's message of Love, Forgiveness and Salvation to a dark place.  -Chris Rasmussen

Our Adult DC mission team will report to the congregation about their ongoing advocacy work on Sunday, June 29 during both worship services.  Anyone interested in learning more about the work of this newly energized advocacy group is invited to the next meeting on Sunday, July 13 at 9:30am in the Parlor.  All are invited to learn more about the important advocacy work we can all do with our legislative representatives.
