Advent's Vision
We are Advent Lutheran Church. As diverse children of God, we strive to be the embodiment of that which God wants all people on earth to be. We love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. We love our neighbor as ourselves, and express this love in service to others. By accepting God's gift of grace through our faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, we are reconciled to God forever.

New This Week:
Transport needed
We have between 3 to 8 friends who live near the Free Store who would like to attend the 11am service at Advent but need transportation. Many of you have met Donald, George , Cliff and Harold over the past several months. We are looking for additional volunteers to help out (especially for this Sunday). If you'd like more details, please contact Steve 704.608.9243 or Caroline 704. 608.8474
Seasonal Contributions of Thankfulness
Each holiday season, Advent Lutheran anticipates and relies on a seasonal increase in contributions. It is through the donations of every individual and family in the congregation that we are able to carry on our work now and throughout the year.
If you are interested in a convenient way to make one-time or recurring contributions or plan to make an additional gift before the end of the year, we encourage you to check out our new online giving option. As the pace of life speeds up around the holidays, you may find online giving a most welcome way to make contributions.
To initiate your one-time or recurring donations, simply visit the church's website, www.Adventlu.org and click the "Give Online" button on the homepage. Your online gifts can be set up to accept any combination of credit card, debit card and direct debit (Checking/Savings). You will have the opportunity to create your own account in order to set up and manage a recurring giving schedule or to track your giving history.
Thank you for your contributions and support!
Sunday School Opportunity
Our children's Sunday school features a series of interactive and fun rotating workshops. Teachers commit to teaching one workshop for only two weeks. They teach the same lesson to two different groups of kids on two consecutive Sundays so our teachers only have to prepare one lesson!
We are currently looking for more folks to help with these rotations. The kids are fun; the curriculum and supplies are provided for you; and the camaraderie of the other teachers is satisfying! It's a great way to get to know other people at church and use your gifts.
In January and early February the children will explore the Lord's Prayer. Currently we are looking for adults to help lead the games and drama workshops on February 8 and 15. Please see Toni Hagerman or Natalie Eklund if you would like to help. Thank you! January 31st Is An Advent Doubleheader! Another Advent Tradition What an opportunity! On Saturday January 31st the Advent Lutheran Men will sponsor their Annual Family Basketball Outing at UNC Charlotte. The Annual Chili Supper sponsored by Social Ministry will immediately precede the game (meal donations accepted - see details below). You can come to church for the chili supper (5:00 p.m.), and then conveniently go to UNC Charlotte campus for the 2nd part of the doubleheader, Charlotte vs. Florida International University (FIU) at 7 p.m.in Halton Arena. Tickets for the game are only $5 per person and we will sit together as a group. Parking is free and convenient. Supper and basketball, and both family style at a reasonable price! In the past we had over 100 members turn out for both the dinner and the game. If you can't make the Chili Supper there are plenty of concessions, so you can have dinner at the game. For more information and tickets please see Keith Wassum in the Gathering Area after the service Dec 28, Jan 4, 11, 18, and 25 or call Keith (704.597.1174) to make other arrangements to get your tickets. Tickets must be paid for at the time of sign-up. Although the deadline for purchasing tickets is Sunday January 25th, for planning purposes it would be helpful for you to get your tickets now, so we can purchase more if needed now. Friends and family are welcome. Ch-Ch-Chili Supper As the cold days of winter loom ahead, we can find warmth in thoughts of the annual June and Mabel Porter Chili Supper coordinated by the Social Ministry Committee. If you'd like to join in the fun of planning and putting on this event, please contact Cheri Strickland. In addition to our sensational chili and salad, we will have hotdogs available. We are returning to a tradition from yesteryear by asking guests to bring either a bread or dessert to share if possible. Proceeds will go to Samaritan House, a cozy caring place for homeless neighbors to recuperate after surgery until they are well enough to return to the harsh life on the streets. Mark your calendar for 5 pm on Saturday, January 31, for this time-honored event which, for extra excitement, is paired with a UNCC basketball game! (See game details above.) But if you aren't interested in going to the game, it's perfectly fine to come only to the supper. And if you are unable to attend either, please consider donating to the good work done at the Samaritan House. Looking forward to welcoming all of you regulars to the Chili Supper and hoping for many new faces as well! We want your BLOOD! Yes, that Social Ministry Committee is always asking for something, but REALLY! Around the holidays the number of blood donations suffers as even dedicated donors are busy with other activities. This steady gift of life is sorely missed. You never know who'll be the next person to need blood - it may be a friend or family member who becomes the appreciative recipient. So come to Advent's Red Cross event on Saturday, January 10, from 9am-1 pm. Lie down, roll up a sleeve, and give it up! Stewardship Quote of the Week: |

Spiritual Development Small Groups Forming In January we are interested in supporting the formation of several new small groups. The focus of these groups will be reflection on life changes many experience at mid-life and beyond-parenting adult children, supporting aging parents, establishing new goals, and rediscovering our true selves. If you are interested in joining with others to explore any of these topics, please see Toni Hagerman to find out more. Sunday School Opportunity Our children's Sunday school features a series of interactive and fun rotating workshops. Teachers commit to teaching one workshop for only two weeks. They teach the same lesson to two different groups of kids on two consecutive Sundays so our teachers only have to prepare one lesson! Outreach
If you wish to financially aid those devastated by disasters or wars, Lutheran Disaster Relief will reach the victims. To donate, go to www.elca.org/disaster. You can donate to provide aid in the area of greatest need or to a need you specify.
Ham It Up!
The food item for December is canned ham. All sizes welcome! Canned hams are
typically fully cooked and can be made quite palatable with a quick microwave heating, which makes them ideal for families who may not have access to standard kitchen cooking facilities. As you shop for your own Christmas dinner, think about picking up an extra ham for our hungry neighbors.

Youth at Advent
Children's Church
We are hoping to find more people who would like to help lead children's church so we could begin
offering children's church during both worship services. A training session for our story telling method will be held on January 24 at Rocky River Presbyterian Church in Concord. Please let Toni Hagerman know if you would like to attend the session to learn more about "Godly Play" and help to lead our children on Sunday mornings. Day Camp We are pleased to announce Advent's new Summer Day Camp for Rising 1st-8th Graders! We are working with Camp Agape to provide a Christian Camp Experience right here at Advent. The result is a very affordable way for your child to experience camp this coming summer! Day Camp will be held at Advent July 20-24 from 9am to 3pm and will be run by mature, experienced Camp Agape counselors. Fees for the week are $125. Extended day options will be available for a small fee. We are limited in the number of campers we can enroll so please register early. You can register by filling out the summer day camp registration form and making a [Ann Schado] non-refundable $50 deposit to hold your spot. See Toni Hagerman for more info. DC Trip The confirmation DC mission trip will be held June 21-26, 2015. This is a date change from what we previously announced. Please update your calendars! Thanks everyone. |
