A Letter from Pastor Pat

It is summer! That time of the year when the days are longer, the nights are shorter, and the temperatures are unimaginably hot! I remember as a child, I could not wait for summer to arrive.

While we weren’t in school, there were those household chores we needed to tend to before we could go outside. We could not wait to get outside, to play jacks, ride our bikes, jump double-dutch or take over the street for a neighborhood game of dodgeball. We were oblivious to the heat; it was never too hot to be outside.

As I look back on those memories I see how those were times that shaped us.

We didn’t all go to the same schools, but we found ways to come together and have a good time.

We didn’t always get along, but our disagreements rarely lasted longer than a day or two, resolved without the assistance of mediators.

We shared what we each brought to the “table;” while we didn’t all have the same things, we each had something we were willing to share so that no one was left out.

I think I understand why Christ instructed us to be like children. Too bad we’ve all grown up and quenched our inner child.

I do realize not everyone had a childhood as I did. Maybe for you, there is no connection. But at some place in your life, you were able to see the joy of children playing together and longed to be a part. It’s never too late to reawaken or rediscover your inner child.

Tag, you’re it!

Scripture for July 2, 2023

John 6:35, 41-51

35Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”

41Then the Jews began to complain about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42They were saying, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” 43Jesus answered them, “Do not complain among yourselves. 44No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father who sent me, and I will raise that person up on the last day. 45It is written in the prophets, ‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me. 46Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father. 47Very truly, I tell you, whoever believes has eternal life. 48I am the bread of life. 49Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. 51I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever, and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”
