 Preaching:  Rev. Adam Snell
John 16:12-15
Proverbs 8:1-4, 22-31
         "I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.  When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.  He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you.  All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. "

~~~~~
       Does not wisdom call, and does not understanding raise her voice?   On the heights, beside the way, at the crossroads she takes her stand;   3   beside the gates in front of the town, at the entrance of the portals she cries out:    "To you, O people, I call, and my cry is to all that live."   The Lord created me at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of long ago.   Ages ago I was set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth.
When there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no springs abounding with water.   Before the mountains had been shaped, before the hills, I was brought forth-   when he had not yet made earth and fields, or the world's first bits of soil.   When he established the heavens, I was there, when he drew a circle on the face of the deep,   when he made firm the skies above, when he established the fountains of the deep,   when he assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters might not transgress his command, when he marked out the foundations of the earth,   then I was beside him, like a master worker; and I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him always,   rejoicing in his inhabited world and delighting in the human race.
Questions to Ponder
As we observe Trinity Sunday this week, both texts selected from the lectionary by our preacher allude especially to the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity.
In the reading from Proverbs, wisdom is personified.
Name the physical places in the first few verses where Wisdom is to be found (there are at least four).
Are these physical places public or private?  What does this say about where Wisdom may be found?
If Wisdom is a person, what can you determine from this passage about her age?
In the reading from John, Jesus is telling his disciples of the work of the Holy Spirit.
Look at the action verbs associated with the Spirit.  What is it that the Spirit will do upon his coming?
If Wisdom is to be found on every street corner in Proverbs, how and where do we hear the voice of the Holy Spirit?
Dear Friends:
Almost fifteen years ago I stood on the campus of  Wesley Theological Seminary.  I was then a wide-eyed first-year student about to take his initial educational steps toward becoming a pastor.  I wanted to learn more about my own faith so that I could more effectively share the truth of Jesus Christ with others.  I hoped I had come to the right place.
About that same time,  Rev. Dr. David McAllister-Wilson also stood on that beautiful acreage in Washington, DC.  That autumn of 2001 he had been elected President of Wesley Seminary.
Three years later I left Wesley, armed with an education to match my passion for Jesus.  President David McAllister-Wilson remained there, though, guiding the seminary and encouraging another generation of students to fuel their own passions for our Lord.  Under his leadership, Wesley has thrived.
We are fortunate to have been able to pull this busy and significant leader away from that thriving campus, however, and have him share his passion with us as  this Sunday's
preacher.  We welcome him as our guest during both worship services.  And, in an even greater coup, David has accepted the invitation of  Bill & Mary Gibb to remain to help us with our
Stop Hunger Now meal-packaging in Heavener Hall after the  10:30 worship service.  As he cheerfully serves side-by-side with us to feed the hungry, he will model the type of servant leadership our Lord asks of all who dare to do great things in his name.
And if great preaching and the opportunity to feed people in Jesus' name isn't enough, our  Joyful Ringers! have pulled in several alumni ringers to make great music  this Sunday.  They've been working hard on a special piece in celebration of the 50th anniversary of our  Whitechapel handbells.  I heard them rehearsing last night, and I know you'll enjoy the power of music to lift your spirit.
Whether you come to be lifted high by the music or come to serve others or come to be inspired by the Word, at St. Paul's you will have come the right place.  I suspect I won't be the only wide-eyed one here.
Peace,
A.B. Snell
Capital Campaign Thanks
Thank you in advance for your prayerful and sacrificial consideration and support of our renovation project.  We have enjoyed the opportunity to discuss the campaign with many members of the congregation at the various gatherings over the past month.  As we journey through our 40 day pledge period, we continue to offer opportunities to answer your questions and discuss your support.  Members of the committee can be identified by gold stars on our name tags and we look forward to hearing from you.
Great Day of Service 2016
For the second year in a row, our Great Day of Service will be a global meal packaging event held in Heavener Hall this Sunday, May 22.  We will be led by Stop Hunger Now (www.stophungernow.org), a non-profit organization that distributes food and other life-saving aid to vulnerable people around the world.   We have set our goal to package 30,000-40,000 meals between the hours of noon and 2 PM.    To that end, we need approximately 150 volunteers and still need 25 more volunteers to be successful!  This is an excellent family serving opportunity (ages 5+) and an intergenerational event.  A light lunch will be provided immediately after the  10:30  church service.
To sign-up to volunteer please contact Kim Longsworth at klongsworth3@verizon.net or 301-320-3684. Also, contact Kim if you wish to request child care for your children under age 5.   Please note, if you bring a baseball cap or hat to wear, you won't have to wear the hairnet during the event!
2x4 Ministry Reminder
Great Day of Service: Please note that in lieu of the 2x4 Second Sunday Lunch, we are encouraging folks to participate in the Great Day of Service on May 22.  Childcare for children under 5 will be provided by the Sama-Miller family.
Justice & Compassion Team
Everyone is invited to their meeting this Wednesday, May 25.  We need YOUR creativity and enthusiasm as we create a subcommittee to plan activities that address discrimination and racial justice.  Please join us!  7 PM  in the Parlor.
UMW Book Club
Interested in continuing the discussion of race in America?  Join the UMW Book Club on June 5 as they discuss Tim Wise's book, Colorblind.  From Amazon.com: "Focusing on disparities in employment, housing, education and healthcare, Wise argues that racism is indeed still an acute problem in the United States today, and that colorblind policies actually worsen the problem of racial injustice.
Colorblind presents a timely and provocative look at contemporary racism and offers fresh ideas on what can be done to achieve true social justice and economic equality."  We will meet in Room 109 at noon for what promises to be a very interesting discussion.
Summer Sunday School
Sunday School Teachers
It is almost summer and starting May 29
Summer Sunday school program will begin for ages 3 years thru 3rd grade.  The children will begin each Sunday in church for a children's message and then will be dismissed to a combined classroom format.  We are looking for two to three adults each Sunday starting June 5 through September 4 to volunteer to lead the children in the classroom.  Also we invite any 6th - 12th graders to volunteer as helpers.  If you have not assisted in the last year all volunteers are requested to complete a Safe Sanctuary form in compliance with St. Paul's on-going Safe Sanctuaries policy.  Please send an email to Amy Frontz at  ajfrontz@verizon.net to sign-up for a Sunday or with any questions.  You can also sign-up in the church office for a  Sunday .
Monday Morning Office Volunteer
If you are interested in being considered as a volunteer in the church office on Monday mornings beginning June 6, please contact Jackie Hartmann, stpaulsunited@stpaulsk.org.  No office experience required, just a friendly smile and helpful hands!
Friendship Club
Plan to go on our annual outing on Tuesday, June 14.  This year, we are going to Harrison's Chesapeake House on Tilghman Island on the Maryland Eastern Shore.  It is a few miles past St. Michael's.  We have a choice of eight different entrees and three desserts.  On the return trip, we'll be stopping at St. Michael's to walk, shop, etc.  We'll be going by bus, leaving the church about 9:30 AM and returning about 4:30 PM .  The cost is $48 per person.  If you would like to join us, please call or e-mail Jerry Watkins at 301-675-1236 or j50.09w@verizon.net.
