Broadband survey open to all community members

Community Broadband Forum scheduled for Oct. 19

CTC Technology and Energy, under contract to Los Alamos County, opened the online broadband survey and speed test today, October 14, to all community members. The comprehensive survey and speed test assess broadband availability, affordability, and accessibility throughout the county.

Additionally, Los Alamos County staff invites the public to a Community Broadband Forum on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 5:30 p.m. The purpose is for the county and its consultant to listen to the community, answer questions and discuss the project's possible next steps. The meeting is scheduled at the White Rock Fire Station 3 at 129 NM-4 for in-person attendance. Those wishing to join virtually may use the following Zoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83127444178.

According to Los Alamos County Broadband Manager Jerry Smith, residents are encouraged to provide their experience with internet speed and reliability in the county by attending the Community Broadband Forum and taking the online survey at https://lacnm.com/BroadbandSurvey. Further, to evaluate the quality and performance of the survey taker's network and to account for varying conditions, Smith requests these individuals perform online speed tests at their homes multiple times over several days by visiting https://speedsurveyapp.com/surveys/los-alamos/. These results will complement the survey findings from the statistically valid sample, which is also underway.

Smith emphasized that this valuable feedback will assist the county in demonstrating its broadband needs and possibly qualify for federal and state grants geared to assist unserved and underserved communities access high-speed internet.

The survey and speed test will close for everyone by 11:59 p.m. on October 28, 2022. For more information on the County's broadband initiative, visit the webpage at https://lacnm.com/broadband or drop an email to Jerry.Smith@lacnm.us.

Sewer Lines to be replaced on Sombrillo Ct.

The Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities (DPU) is starting a sewer line replacement project on Sombrillo Court with excavation to begin on Monday. DPU’s contractor is currently potholing there to locate existing sewer lines in preparation for the project.

Starting Monday, the entrance to Sombrillo Nursing & Rehabilitation Center will be narrowed while installing a new manhole in the area. Drivers will still be able to enter and exit but are asked to drive slowly and cautiously while entering and exiting the parking lot. It has not yet been determined how long the manhole installation should take.

The installation of the new sewer line is expected to take under 30 days. It will occur to the side of the Sombrillo Ct. cul-de-sac so traffic won’t be impeded. The replacement is being done because a portion of the sewer line and multiple service lines were constructed in the past with no flushing points. Some sections have fittings that cannot be maintained because their pipes are undersized and awkwardly placed.

The replacement pipes will be placed according to DPU’s current standards that include an adequately-sized main line with manholes and service lines with adequate slope and cleanouts for flushing.

Residents with questions about the project may call DPU Senior Engineer James Martinez at 505.663.1907 during business hours.
