Public Works crews will be conducting an Inflow and Infiltration (I&I) Study of the sanitary sewer system beginning Monday, October 26, through Friday, December 11, 2026, to identify areas where excess groundwater and stormwater may be entering the system.
What You Can Expect:
As part of the study, crews will be conducting two types of inspections throughout the City:
-
Daytime Smoke Testing: Crews will introduce non-toxic smoke into sewer lines to identify leaks and improper connections. You may notice smoke coming from manholes, roof plumbing vents, or other openings connected to the sewer system. This is a normal part of the testing process.
-
Nighttime Manhole Inspections between 12 a.m. to 6 a.m.: Crews will inspect manholes and measure wastewater flows during overnight hours, when normal sewer usage is lowest. These inspections help identify areas where groundwater may be entering the system.
Where will work take place?
The first upcoming work area is from W Oakland Park Blvd and NW 9th Ave to NW 29th Street to NW 6th Ave/North Andrews Ave, shown in the highlighted section of the photo above. If you live in the affected area, you may notice crews and inspection vehicles during the scheduled activities.
Why is the study important?
By identifying where excess water is entering the system, the City can prioritize repairs, improve efficiency, reduce unnecessary treatment costs, and help prevent future sewer issues.
We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we work to maintain and improve our wastewater infrastructure.
