Dear neighbors,
The Wilton Manors annual Stonewall Pride Parade and Street Festival is undeniably one of the most anticipated events of the year, and no piece of legislation will change that.
If signed into law by the governor, SB 1438 will prohibit businesses from admitting children to adult live performances. Last week, the City Commission unanimously voted to amend the 2023 Stonewall Pride Parade and Street Festival Special Event Permit, requiring businesses to abide by Senate Bill (SB) 1438. This vote was necessary to protect our businesses, and to minimize the risk of receiving penalties, fines, and legal repercussions. The amended special event permit in no way bans or prohibits any member of our community from expressing themselves. It does, however, seek to ensure that adult performances take place where only adults are present.

Like you, I oppose legislation that limits LGBTQ+ rights, aims to suppress cultural experiences, and carries repercussions that threaten our democracy. What can we do? I will continue to advocate, vote, and use my voice to try to block future legislation like this. I encourage you to do the same. Here are the elected officials who represent Wilton Manors in Tallahassee. While they both certainly oppose legislation like SB 1438, please feel free to reach out to them to make your voice heard.

I can’t wait to see you all at this year’s Stonewall festivities on June 17th. This is our true celebration of Pride, of the work that has been done, and the advocacy we all need to commit to until the LGBTQ+ community is no longer marginalized. I am ready to make it our best Stonewall celebration yet and hope you are too!
Sincerely,
Mayor Scott Newton
