THE HOLY APOSTLE PETER

Peter was the son of Jonah and the brother of Andrew, the First-called. He was of the tribe of Simeon, from the town of Bethsaida. He was a fisherman and was at first called Simon, but the Lord was pleased to call him Cephas or Peter: And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, He said, You are Simon the son of Jonah: you shall be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, a rock (John 1:42). He was the first of the disciples to clearly express faith in the Lord Jesus, saying: Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God (Matthew 16:16). His love for the Lord was great, and his faith in the Lord became gradually stronger. When the Lord was brought to trial, Peter denied Him three times; but after only one glance into the face of the Lord, Peter's soul was filled with shame and repentance. After the descent of the Holy Spirit, Peter showed himself to be a fearless and powerful preacher of the Gospel. Following one of his sermons in Jerusalem, three-thousand souls were converted to the Faith. He preached the Gospel in Palestine, Asia Minor, Illyria and Italy. Peter worked many powerful miracles: he healed the sick and resurrected the dead, and the sick were healed even from his shadow. He had a great struggle with Simon the Magician, who proclaimed himself to be a god, but who was in reality a servant of Satan. Peter finally shamed and defeated him. By order of Simon's friend, the evil Emperor Nero, Peter was condemned to death. Having consecrated Linus Bishop of Rome, and having counseled and comforted the flock of Christ, Peter proceeded joyfully to his death. Seeing the cross before him, he begged his executioners to crucify him upside down, for he considered himself unworthy to die as had his Lord. Thus, this great servant of the Great Lord reposed and received a wreath of eternal glory.

THE HOLY APOSTLE PAUL

Paul was born in Tarsus and was of the tribe of Benjamin. At first he was called Saul. He studied under Gamaliel, and was a Pharisee and a persecutor of Christianity. He was miraculously converted to the Christian Faith by the Lord Himself, Who appeared to him on the road to Damascus. He was baptized by the Apostle Ananias, named Paul and numbered in the service of the Great Apostles. With fiery zeal Paul preached the Gospel everywhere, from the borders of Arabia to Spain, among the Jews and among the Gentiles, and received the title "the Apostle to the Gentiles." As horrible as his sufferings were, so much greater was his superhuman patience. Throughout all the years of his preaching, Paul hung from day to day as on a weak thread between life and death. Having fulfilled all his days and nights with labor and suffering for Christ, having organized the Church in many places, and having attained such a degree of perfection, he was able to say: It is now no longer I that live, but Christ lives in me (Galatians 2:20). Paul was beheaded in Rome during the reign of Emperor Nero, at the same time as the martyrdom of the Apostle Peter.

Свети апостол Петар . Син Јонин, брат Андреје првозваног, из племена Симеонова, из града Витсаиде. Био је рибар, и најпре се звао Симеоном, но Господ је благозволео назвати га Кифом, или Петром (Јн 1, 42). Он је први од ученика јасно изразио веру у Господа Исуса рекавши: „Ти су Христос, Син Бога живога“ (Мт 16, 16). Његова љубав према Господу била је велика, а његова вера у Господа постепено се утврђивала. Када је Господ изведен на суд, Петар Га се три пута одрекао, но само један поглед у лице Господа – и душа Петрова била је испуњена стидом и покајањем. После силаска Светога Духа Петар се јавља неустрашивим и силним проповедником Јеванђеља. После његове једне беседе у Јерусалиму обратило се у веру око три хиљаде душа. Проповедао је Јеванђеље по Палестини и Малој Азији, по Илирику и Италији. Чинио је моћна чудеса: лечио је болесне, ваксрсавао мртве; чак и од сенке његове исцељивали су се болесници. Имао је велику борбу са Симоном Волхом, који се издавао за бога, а у ствари био је слуга сатанин. Најзад га је посрамио и победио. По заповести опакога цара Нерона, Симоновог пријатеља, Петар би осуђен на смрт. Поставивши Лина за епископа у Риму и посаветовавши и утешивши стадо Христово, Петар пође радосно на смрт. Видећи крст пред собом, он умоли своје џелате, да га распну наопако, пошто сматраше себе недостојним да умре као и Господ његов. И тако упокоји се велики слуга великог Господара, и прими венац славе вечне (в. 16. јануар).

Свети апостол Павле.  Родом из Тарса, а од племена Венијаминова. Најпре се звао Савле, учио се код Гамалила, био фарисеј и гонитељ Хришћанства. Чудесно обраћен у веру хришћанску самим Господом, који му се јавио на путу за Дамаск. Крштен од апостола Ананије, прозват Павлом и увршћен у службу великих апостола. Са пламеном ревношћу проповедао Јеванђеље свуда од граница Арабије до Шпаније, међу Јеврејима и међу незнабошцима. Добио назив апостола незнабожаца. Колико су страховита била његова страдања, толико је било његово натчовечанско стрпљење. Кроз све године свог проповедања он је из дана у дан висио као о једном слабом кончићу између живота и смрти. Пошто је испунио све дане и ноћи трудом и страдањем за Христа, пошто је организовао цркву по многобројним местима, и пошто је достигао ту меру савршенства, да је могао рећи: „Не живим ја него Христос живи у мени“, тада је био посечен у Риму, у време цара Нерона, кад и апостол Петар.

Dear President Boris, respected parishioners of the Church of St. Sava from Boston,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your selfless help during the celebration of our first Slava of Sts. Cyril and Methodius. As you know, every beginning is complex, and for now, we have managed to form our community, have services, and gather in the Greek church of St. George. God willing, I hope that in the future, we will be able to gather in our own church as well.

It was nice to see, in addition to our bishop and the clergy, you and the members of the Board from Boston, the president of the Circle of Serbian Sisters, Anita Žilić, Kolo Sisters, and many parishioners from Boston. We were especially pleased with the guest appearance of your Youth Folklore Ensemble Sveti Sava and Choir Desanka Maksimović. The children were exceptional, with beautiful costumes and a vibrant program. It was quite the feast for our little community in Connecticut. Also, I would like to thank you for your donations. It means a lot to us. Your community is a real example for us, and we look forward to future collaborations, such as joint events and cultural exchanges, with the hope that we, too, will emulate you and that one day we will be able to help you. Only together in harmony and brotherly love can we survive.

3rd Sunday after Pentecost

The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness! No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

Свећа је телу око. Ако дакле буде око твоје здраво, све ће тело твоје светло бити. Ако ли око твоје кварно буде, све ће тело твоје тамно бити. Ако је дакле видело што је у теби тама, а камоли тама? Нико не може два господара служити: јер или ће на једног мрзети, а другог љубити; или једном волети, а за другог не марити. Не можете Богу служити и мамони. Зато вам кажем: не брините се за живот свој, шта ћете јести, или шта ћете пити; ни за тело своје, у шта ћете се обући. Није ли живот претежнији од хране, и тело од одела? Погледајте на птице небеске како не сеју, нити жњу, ни сабирају у житнице; па Отац ваш небески храни их. Нисте ли ви много претежнији од њих? А ко од вас бринући се може примакнути расту свом лакат један? И за одело што се бринете? Погледајте на љиљане у пољу како расту; не труде се нити преду. Али ја вам кажем да ни Соломун у свој својој слави не обуче се као један од њих. А кад траву у пољу, која данас јесте, а сутра се у пећ баца, Бог тако одева, а камоли вас, маловерни? Не брините се дакле говорећи: Шта ћемо јести, или, шта ћемо пити, или, чим ћемо се оденути? Јер све ово незнабошци ишту; а зна и Отац ваш небески да вама треба све ово. Него иштите најпре царство Божје, и правду Његову, и ово ће вам се све додати.
