In the third year of His preaching, the Lord Jesus often spoke to His disciples of His approaching passion, and also of His glory following His suffering on the Cross. So that His impending passion would not totally weaken His disciples, and so that no one would fall away from Him, He, the All-wise, wanted to show them a portion of His divine glory before His passion. For that reason, He took Peter, James and John with Him and went by night to Mt. Tabor, and was there transfigured before them: And His face shone as the sun and His garments became white as snow (Matthew 17:2). Moses and Elias [Elijah], the great Old Testament prophets, also appeared beside Him. Seeing this, His disciples were stunned. Peter said: Lord, it is good for us to be here: if You will, let us make here three tabernacles; one for You, one for Moses and one for Elias (Matthew 17:4). While Peter still spoke, Moses and Elias departed, and a bright cloud overshadowed the Lord and His disciples, and there came a voice from the cloud saying: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear Him (Matthew 17:5). Hearing the voice, the disciples fell face down on the ground as though dead, and remained that way, prostrate in fear, until the Lord came to them and said: Arise, and be not afraid (Matthew 17:7). Why did the Lord take only three disciples onto Tabor, and not all? Because Judas was not worthy to behold the divine glory of the Teacher, Whom he will betray; and the Lord did not want to leave him alone at the foot of the mountain, so that the betrayer would not, because of this, justify his betrayal. Why was our Lord transfigured on a mountain and not in a valley? So as to teach us two virtues: love of labor and godly-thoughts--for climbing to the heights requires labor, and the heights themselves represent the elevation of our thoughts to the things of God. Why was our Lord transfigured at night? Because the night is more suitable than the day for prayer and godly-thoughts; and the night, by its darkness, conceals all the beauty of the earth, and reveals the beauty of the starry heavens. Why did Moses and Elias appear? In order to destroy the Jewish fallacy that Christ was one of the prophets--Elias or Jeremiah or some other. That is why He appeared as a King, above the prophets, and that is why Moses and Elias appeared as His servants. Until then, our Lord had manifested His divine power many times to the disciples; but on Mt. Tabor He manifested His Divine Nature. This vision of His Divinity, and the hearing of the heavenly witness to His being the Son of God, must have served the disciples in the days of the Lord's passion--in the strengthening of a steadfast faith in Him and in His final victory.

THE TRANSFIGURATION OF OUR LORD, GOD AND SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST

Where Israel defeated Sisera,

There also, did deign to go, the Heavenly King,

To pray in nightly vigils,

The glory of His Transfiguration, to manifest,

And the faith of His followers, to confirm

In His eternal victory as Victor.

There, with divine light, He shone forth,

Dispelled the thick darkness, and illuminated Tabor.

The Light, long concealed within Himself,

Which He had shed upon the world in brief flashes,

In abundant rays, now burst forth--

Joyful rays, sweet rays--

The brilliance of His humanity, to reveal to heaven,

And to reveal to earth and men the truth of His Divinity.

Let heaven, its Messenger, see;

Let the earth recognize God, the Savior.

REFLECTION

Why did our Lord not manifest His divine glory on Tabor before all the disciples instead of before three of them? First, because He Himself gave the Law through the mouth of Moses: At the mouth of two witnesses or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established (Deuteronomy 19:15). Therefore, three witnesses are sufficient. These three witnesses represent three main virtues: Peter--Faith, for he was the first to confess his faith in Christ as the Son of God; James--Hope, for, with faith in the promise of Christ, he was the first who laid down his life for the Lord, being the first to be slain by the Jews; John--Love, for he reclined on the bosom of the Lord, and remained beneath the Cross of the Lord until the end. God is called not the God of many, but rather the God of the chosen. I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob (Exodus 3:6). God often valued a faithful man more than an entire nation. Thus, on many occasions, He wanted to destroy the entire Jewish nation, but because of the prayers of righteous Moses, He spared that nation so that it could live. God listened more to the faithful Prophet Elias than to the entire unbelieving kingdom of Ahab. Because of the prayers of one man, God saved towns and people. Thus, the sinful town of Ustiug would have been destroyed by fire and hail, had it not been saved by the prayers of the one and only righteous man in it, St. Procopius, the Fool-for-Christ (July 8).

CONTEMPLATION

To contemplate the providence of God, which rewarded the virtue of Ruth and Boaz (The Book of Ruth):

1. How Ruth, being left a widow, remained faithful to Naomi, her aged mother-in-law, and how by her labors she fed both Naomi and herself;

2. How the wealthy Boaz was merciful, and helped these two poor women;

3. How Boaz and Ruth entered into marriage, from whom was born Obed, the father of Jesse, who was the father of David.

HOMILY

About the exaltation of the Church of God

"And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord's house shall be established in the top of the mountains and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow into it" (Isaiah 2:2).

This prophecy pertains to the Church of Christ. Although this prophecy must have seemed mysterious to the Jews before Christ, it is completely clear for us today. The mountain, or heights, of the house of the Lord is truly established in the top of the mountains--in the heights of the heavens--for the Church of Christ is primarily sustained not by the earth, but rather by the heavens; and one part of the membership of the Church (and by now, a greater part) is to be found in heaven, while the other part is still on earth.

Further, the Church of Christ is exalted above the hills--above all earthly and human greatness. Human philosophy and art, and all the cultures of people, as well as all earthly values, represent only the low hills in comparison to the infinite heights of Christ's Church. For it was not difficult for the Church to create all of those hills; while not one of them, nor all of them together, even in the course of many thousands of years, could create the Church.

Finally, the prophet says: All nations shall flow into it. Truly, up to now, into what have all the nations flowed, if not into the Church of Christ? The Temple of Jerusalem was inaccessible to the Gentiles under the penalty of death. However, the Church has called all nations on earth unto itself from the very beginning--obedient to the command of the Lord: Go ye therefore and teach all nations (Matthew 28:19).

This is the vision of Isaiah, the son of Amos--a vision from afar, a vision truthful and wonderful.

O Wonderful Lord, we give You unceasing thanks that You have made us worthy to be the children of Your Holy and True Church, that is exalted above all the worldly heights.

To Thee be glory and praise forever. Amen.

Треће године Своје проповеди на земљи Господ Исус чешће говораше ученицима Својим о блиском страдању Своме, но уједно и о слави Својој после страдања на крсту. Да не би предстојеће страдање Његово сасвим раслабило ученике те да не би отпали од Њега, Он Премудри, хтеде им пре страдања показати делимично славу Своју божанску. Зато узевши собом Петра, Јакова и Јована изиђе с њима ноћу на гору Тавор, и ту се преобрази пред њима. И засја се лице његово као сунце а хаљине његове посташе свијетле као снијег. И појавише се покрај Њега Мојсеј и Илија, велики старозаветни пророци. И видеше ученици и удивише се. И рече Петар: Господе, добро нам је овде бити; ако хоћеш да начинимо овде три сјенице (колибе): Теби једну, а Мојсију једну, а једну Илији. Но док још Петар говораше, удаљише се Мојсеј и Илија, и сјајан облак окружи Господа и ученике, и дође глас из облака: ово је син мој љубазни, који је по мојој вољи; њега послушајте. Чувши овај глас ученици падоше ничице на земљу као мртви и осташе тако лежећи у страху докле им Господ не приђе и не рече им: устаните и не бојте се (Мат. 17). Зашто Господ узе само тројицу ученика на Тавор а не све? Јер Јуда не беше достојан да види божанску славу Учитеља, кога ће он издати, а њега самог Господ не хте оставити под гором, да не би тиме издајник правдао своје издајство. Зашто се преобрази на гори а не у долини. Да би нас научио двема врлинама: трудољубљу и богомислију. Јер пењање на висину захтева труд, а висина представља висину мисли наших, тј. богомислије. Зашто се преобрази ноћу? Јер је ноћ подеснија за молитву и богомислије него дан, и јер ноћ закрива тамом сву земаљску красоту а открива красоту звезданог неба. Зашто се појавише Мојсеј и Илија? Да се разбије заблуда јеврејска, као да је Христос неки од пророка, Илија, Јеремија или неки други – зато се Он јавља као Цар над пророцима, и зато се Мојсеј и Илија јављају као слуге Његове. Дотле је Господ много пута показао ученицима божанску моћ Своју, а на Тавору им је показао божанску природу Своју. То виђење Божанства Његовог и слишање небеског сведочанства о Њему као Сину Божјем требало је да послужи ученицима у дане страдања Господњег на укрепљење непоколебљиве вере у Њега и Његову крајњу победу.

Тамо где Израиљ победи Сисару

Изволи се тамо и Небесном Цару

На молитве поћи и на ноћна бдења,

Да покаже славу Свог Преображења,

И утврди веру својих следбеника

У победу трајну Њега – Победника.

Ту светлост божанску Он из Себе пусти

Па обасја Тавор, мрак разагна густи;

Светлост што ј’ у Себи дуго задржав’о

Од које је свету по мало раздав’о

Пустио је сада лучама обилним,

Лучама радосним, лучама умилним.

Небу да открије блесак човечанства,

Земљи и људима истину Божанства.

Нека небо види Посланика свога,

Нека земља позна Спаситеља Бога.

РАСУЂИВАЊЕ

Зашто Господ не показа славу Своју божанску на Тавору пред свима ученицима него само пред тројицом? Зато, прво, што је Он сам кроз уста Мојсејева дао закон: на рјечима два или три свједока да остане ствар (V Мојс. 19, 15) … Три сведока су, дакле, довољна. Даље, и за то још, што су та три сведока били одабрани. Њих тројица представљају 3 главне добродетељи: Петар – веру, јер је он први исказао веру своју у Христа као Сина Божјег, Јаков – наду, јер је с надом у обећање Христово први положио живот свој за Господа будући први убијен од Јевреја, Јован – љубав, јер је на прси Господње наслоњен био и под Крстом Господњим остао до краја. Бог се не назива Бог многих него Бог одабраних. Ја сам Бог Аврама, Исака и Јакова. Често је једног верног човека Бог ценио више него цео један народ. Тако је Он у више махова хтео уништити народ Јеврејски, но због молитава праведнога Мојсеја оставио је народ тај у животу. И више је слушао Бог верног Илију пророка него целу царевину неверног Ахава. Због молитава једног човека често је Бог спасавао градове и народе. Тако грешни град Устјуг имаше бити срушен огњем и градом, да га не спасе молитвама својим један једини праведник у њему, св. Прокопије јуродиви (8. јула).

СОЗЕРЦАЊЕ

Да созерцавам Промисао Божји који награди врлину Руте и Воза (Рут.) и то:

1. како Рута оставши удова оста верна свекрви својој старој и трудом својим храњаше и њу и себе;

2. како богати Воз беше милостив и помагаше ове две сироте жене;

3. како Воз и Рута ступише у брак, из ког, се роди Овид, отац Јесеја, оца Давидова.

о узвишености цркве Божје

Биће у потоња времена гора дома

Господњега утврђена уврх гора и

узвишена изнад хумова, и стјецаће

се к њој сви народи. (Иса. 2, 2)

Ово пророчанство односи се на Цркву Христову. Колико је ово пророчанство могло изгледати тајанствено за Јевреје пре Христа, толико је оно нама данас сасвим јасно. Гора, или висина, дома Господњега заиста је утврђена уврх гора, тј. уврх висина небесних; јер Црква Христова прво не држи се земљом него небом, и јер најзад један део чланова цркве (и то сада већи део) налази се на небу док је други још на земљи. Даље, Црква Христова узвишена је изнад хумова, тј. изнад свих земаљских и људских величина. И философија људска, и уметност, и све културе народа, и све вредности земаљске представљају само ниске хумове према недогледној висини Цркве Христове. Јер све те хумове цркви није било тешко створити, док ниједан од њих – нити сви они укупно, у течају многих хиљада година – није могао створити цркву. Најзад, говори пророк, стјецаће се к њој сви народи. Коме су се, у истини, до сада стекли сви народи, ако не Цркви Христовој? Храм Јерусалимски био је неприступан незнабошцима под претњом смртне казне. Црква је пак од почетка призивала све народе на земљи, послушна заповести Господа: идите, и научите све народе (Мат. 28, 19). То је виђење Исаије, сина Амосова, виђење из далеке даљине, виђење истинито и чудесно.

О Господе чудесни, ми Ти благодаримо непрекидно, што си нас удостојио, да будемо деца цркве Твоје свете и истините, и узвишене изнад свих светских висина. Теби слава и хвала вавек. Амин.

Therefore the kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. And when he had begun to settle accounts, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. But as he was not able to pay, his master commanded that he be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and that payment be made. The servant therefore fell down before him, saying, ‘Master, have patience with me, and I will pay you all.’ Then the master of that servant was moved with compassion, released him, and forgave him the debt. But that servant went out and found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and he laid hands on him and took him by the throat, saying, ‘Pay me what you owe!’ So his fellow servant fell down at his feet and begged him, saying, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you all.’ And he would not, but went and threw him into prison till he should pay the debt. So when his fellow servants saw what had been done, they were very grieved, and came and told their master all that had been done. Then his master, after he had called him, said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you begged me. Should you not also have had compassion on your fellow servant, just as I had pity on you?’ And his master was angry, and delivered him to the torturers until he should pay all that was due to him. So My heavenly Father also will do to you if each of you, from his heart, does not forgive his brother his trespasses.”

Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.” And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”

And it happened, as He spoke these things, that a certain woman from the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, “Blessed is the womb that bore You, and the breasts which nursed You!” But He said, “More than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”

Паде другар његов пред ноге његове и мољаше га говорећи: Причекај ме, и све ћу ти платити. А он не хте, него га одведе и баци у тамницу док не плати дуга. Видевши пак другари његови тај догађај жао им би врло, и отишавши казаше господару свом сав догађај. Тада га дозва господар његов, и рече му: Зли слуго! Сав дуг овај опростих теби, јер си ме молио. Није ли требало да се и ти смилујеш на свог другара, као и ја на те што се смиловах? И разгневи се господар његов, и предаде га мучитељима док не плати сав дуг свој. Тако ће и Отац мој небески учинити вама, ако не опростите сваки брату свом од срца својих.

А кад иђаху путем и Он уђе у једно село, а жена нека, по имену Марта, прими Га у своју кућу. И у ње беше сестра, по имену Марија, која и седе код ногу Исусових и слушаше беседу Његову. А Марта се беше забунила како ће Га дочекати, и прикучивши се рече: Господе! Зар Ти не мариш што ме сестра моја остави саму да служим? Реци јој, дакле, да ми помогне. А Исус одговарајући рече јој: Марта! Марта! Бринеш се и трудиш за много, А само је једно потребно. Али је Марија добри део изабрала, који се неће узети од ње.

А кад то говораше, подиже глас једна жена из народа и рече Му: Благо утроби која те је носила, и сисама које си сао! А Он рече: Благо и онима који слушају реч Божију, и држе је.
