Father's Message

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

On Saturday, we will celebrate the Feast of the Holy Apostle Thomas, and on Sunday, the 17th Sunday after Pentecost, we will commemorate Saints Sergius and Bacchus. On this day, we will read from the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 25, verses 14-30. This Gospel passage recounts the conversation between the Canaanite woman and our Savior. Why did Christ choose the 12 Apostles, and could the Heart-Knower and Creator have made a mistake? Of course not. Then, why did the Apostles display the traits of ordinary, sinful people? How did Judas, the betrayer, the worst person ever born, end up among them? How did Peter deny Christ three times, and why do we call Thomas "doubting"?

If the Lord is infallible, which He is, then the issue lies with man's fallen nature. God has given man freedom, and under no circumstances will He take it away. This means that people misuse their freedom or are led astray by the father of lies to do evil and follow the wrong path. This was true then, and it remains true today, and it will be so until the end of the world.

What does the example of the Apostle Thomas teach us, and what does the example of the Canaanite woman show us? Christ Himself taught Thomas that blessed are those who believe without having to see. Thomas justified his doubt and believed only after meeting the Risen Lord and placing his fingers in the wounds of Christ, proclaiming, "My Lord and my God." We should question our faith when it does not align with our lives and deeds, but we must never doubt God's love and mercy. The Canaanite woman understood this as well. She was a suffering mother of a sick, demon-possessed daughter, who, though of a different faith and rejected by the Jewish people, sought, begged, and humbled herself. She endured insults and humiliation because she knew that even as an outsider, the Lord could help her.

She displayed the virtues that only the best among us possess. Indeed, trials and tribulations make a person persistent, patient, and hopeful that God will help them when people cannot or will not. As our people say, "Without hardship, there is no prayer." This poor woman waited and followed Christ and the Apostles, crying and pleading. It is difficult to imagine being compared to a dog, being rejected and despised, but her refusal to be discouraged and her persistence in begging not for herself but for her child moved the Lord, who recognized in her the highest act of faith, saying, "Let it be done for you as you have believed," and her daughter was healed at that very moment.

Great is our God, and we, as humans believe, doubt, struggle, fall, and rise again. By following the example of the doubting Apostle Thomas and the genuinely believing Canaanite woman, we must cultivate these virtues and show them to our neighbors, within our families, in our parish, and to all people whom God places in our path.

May we meet in peace and love in our beautiful church!

Your Priest,

Fr. Nikola Todorovic

17th Sunday after Pentecost

Then Jesus went out from there and departed to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a woman of Canaan came from that region and cried out to Him, saying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon-possessed.” But He answered her not a word. And His disciples came and urged Him, saying, “Send her away, for she cries out after us.” But He answered and said, “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” Then she came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, help me!” But He answered and said, “It is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs.” And she said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.” Then Jesus answered and said to her, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed from that very hour.
