Teacher Appreciation Week

Let’s face it. This school year has been weird. But we’re getting through it, in part thanks to our nation’s amazing educators. Take a moment to #ThankATeacher during Teacher Appreciation Week, May 3-7.

What YOU can do to help:

1) Participate in our Thank You Card Campaign!

Use your own stationery, or, here is a link to the national PTA Teacher Appreciation week page with many downloadable templates, cards and stickers.
Have your child bring his/her teacher or staff member the Thank You Card, a special drawing, and/or simple tokens of appreciation during this week. Parents should also consider sending in thank-yous if they feel moved to. A heartfelt “I see your hard work, and appreciate you” goes a long way.
2) Sign up to donate items for the lunch we will provide for all teachers and staff that week. PTA will be providing the main meal, but we could use help with sides/chips, cookies, pop, and water. We need all items in by Friday, April 30th. Here is link to sign up.
Thanks in advance for making this a “feel good” week for our hard working, dedicated, talented, and devoted teachers and staff!

This is our annual music department fundraiser and all donations go to support these talented musicians. Students should arrive 30 minutes prior to their performance time. 50/50 Raffle, drinks and some snacks (cash only) will be available for purchase from the Fairview Park Music and Theatre Association on the FHS lawn throughout the day.

We would like to create a community concert feel, so bring your lawn chairs, blankets and enjoy the day. You are welcome to stay as long as you like. We will be following Covid protocols so we ask that you wear masks and social distance. The Fairview Park Music and Theatre Association will be there with drinks and packaged snacks for purchase, as well as their awesome 50/50 raffle. Should the day involve inclement weather, we will move the event indoors to the auditorium. This will require different performing times (which we will provide once we know the status of the weather for the event). There will be only 2 guests per performer allowed, socially distanced seating.

3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade Ohio State Tests

Ohio State achievement Tests tell us how well our students are growing in the knowledge and skills outlined in Ohio’s Learning Standards. These tests help guide and strengthen future teaching so we can be sure that we are preparing our students for long-term success in school, college, careers, and life. Test results also allow citizens to know how their local schools are performing compared to others around the state. Testing time is here again. By helping your child become physically and mentally prepared, you are helping them lower any feelings of test anxiety. Test anxiety is a very common experience; however, with some preparation, it can be reduced and improve their performance.

Please help your son/daughter prepare by:

  • Getting an adequate night’s sleep (8-10 hours)
  • Wake up on time to avoid rushing and arrive to school on time
  • Eat a nutritious breakfast
  • Reminding them to listen closely to all directions and read directions carefully
  • Answer questions they know first, and come back to the harder questions later
  • Arriving to school with a fully charged iPad and the charging cord

When your child feels confident in their test taking skills, they will have less text anxiety and be able to focus on doing their best and showing what they have learned. The remaining testing schedule is as follows:

Class Date Time Test

5th Grade Tuesday, May 4th 10:30 AM-12:00 PM. Science Part 1
Wednesday, May 5th 10:30 AM-12:00 PM Science Part 2

The Box Tops app is so easy to use. If you are shopping online for groceries or get email receipts, you can still earn Box Tops for Gilles-Sweet.

1. Download the app on your phone.Box Tops
2. Choose our school: Gilles-Sweet Elementary.
3. Start scanning receipts to earn money for our school!

Gilles-Sweet will still be collecting the old clipped Box Tops that have not expired. Place the Box Tops in a small baggie and send to school with your child. The Box Tops will then be collected from a PTA coordinator who then submits them.
Mental Health Resources Highlighted by OhioGuidestone
Under the leadership of Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, OhioMHAS has ramped up state efforts to increase access to mental health and addiction services and promote helpful resources throughout the pandemic and is approaching the issue of social isolation from multiple angles. Earlier this year, the department established the COVID Careline – 1.800.720.9616 – to help meet the needs of Ohioans struggling with loneliness, isolation and other challenges resulting from the pandemic. OhioMHAS also launched the Strive For Five Challenge, a statewide awareness campaign to help individuals and families cope with feelings of stress, anxiety, and isolation by connecting with others.
OhioMHAS and its county partners continue to promote a variety of resources to help young people through these challenging times as well. The Hey I’m Here campaign is a youth-led online community that provides a safe digital space for young people to share their stories, offer encouragement to one-anther, and help peers find mental health resources. Meanwhile, the Be Present Ohio website offers resources for teens and young adults to learn how they can care for their mental health in stressful times, and it provides them with tips for talking to close friends, siblings and classmates who may be struggling emotionally.
