We are excited to launch a new segment in our church newsletter titled "Ask Father". This section will provide an opportunity for our parishioners to engage more deeply with matters of faith and church life. Parishioners are invited to submit their questions about religion and spirituality. Each week, Fr. Aleksandar will select one question to answer, offering insights and guidance. The names of those who submit questions will remain anonymous. We hope this initiative will enrich our collective understanding of Orthodoxy.

I was taught the Slava is passed down to a son, but what if there is no son in the family or what if a couple divorces?

In last week's newsletter, late Fr. Toma Stojsic addressed how Krsna Slava's inheritance works. A follow-up question asked whether daughters can continue this family tradition. Traditionally, when a woman marries, she adopts the Slava of her husband's family. But what happens if there are no male children to continue the Slava? It is perfectly normal for female children to continue celebrating their family's Slava.

For example, some women celebrate their husband's Slava and maiden Slava, observing the latter with essential elements: Kolach, Zito, and a candle. This way, they offer prayers of gratitude to God and the patron saint of their childhood home.

In the Diaspora, it is common for women to marry men who are not of the Orthodox faith and do not have a Slava. In such cases, it is natural for the woman to continue celebrating her maiden Slava. If a woman gets divorced, she can choose whether to continue celebrating her ex-husband's Slava. It is not wrong to do so, mainly if she has celebrated it for years and feels a strong spiritual connection to that saint.

Many people also celebrate a main Slava and an additional prislava (preslava). The ritual involving kolach, candles, and zito should not be interrupted once it begins. However, in exceptional circumstances like mourning or illness, celebrants may choose not to invite guests.

Мене су учили да син наслеђује славу, али шта ако отац нема сина, или ако се пар разведе?

У прошлом броју смо дали одговор по питању наслеђивања Крсне славе, у виду текста из пера пок. Проте Томе Стојшића. Стигло је и горње потпитање у погледу женске деце. Познато је да када се девојка уда да почиње славити славу куће у коју се удала тј. славу свога супруга. Шта се дешава уколико нема мушке деце да наставе славу? Нормално је и природно да женска деца наставе славити славу. Имамо примере где се девојка уда, слави заједно супругову славу али настави да слави своју девојачку славу уз основне елемнте славе: колач, жито и свећу. На тај начин она узноси благодарне молитве Богу и Светитељу заштитнику дома у којем је одрасла са својим родитељима. Врло је честа појава у Дијаспори да се девојке удају за особу која није Православне вере и нема крсну славу. Природно је да ће наставити да слави девојачку славу. Уколико се неко разведе и у дилеми је да ли да настави славити мужевљеву славу или не, ту је ствар избора. Није погрешно да настави славити славу свога бившег мужа поготово ако се већ годинама славила та слава и особа је кроз молитву "везана" за тог Светитеља. Такође, постоји врло често да људи имају главну крсну славу а поред тога и приславу (преславу).Када се почне славити слава не треба прекидати обредно слављење уз колач, свећу и жито, мада у изузетним ситуацијама слављеници могу одлучити да не позивају госте (жалост, болест итд).

Sunday of the Paralytic

After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew, Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water. For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water; then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease he had. Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?” The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me. Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.” And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked. And that day was the Sabbath. The Jews therefore said to him who was cured, “It is the Sabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry your bed.” He answered them, “He who made me well said to me, ‘Take up your bed and walk.’” Then they asked him, “Who is the Man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” But the one who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, a multitude being in that place. Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, “See, you have been made well. Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you.” The man departed and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.

А онде беше један човек који тридесет и осам година беше болестан. Кад виде Исус овог где лежи, и разуме да је већ одавно болестан, рече му: Хоћеш ли да будеш здрав? Одговори Му болесни: Да, Господе; али немам човека да ме спусти у бању кад се замути вода; а док ја дођем други сиђе пре мене. Рече му Исус: Устани, узми одар свој и ходи. И одмах оздрави човек, и узевши одар свој хођаше. А тај дан беше субота. Тада говораху Јевреји ономе што оздрави: Данас је субота и не ваља ти одра носити. А он им одговори: Који ме исцели он ми рече: Узми одар свој и ходи. А они га запиташе: Ко је тај човек који ти рече: Узми одар свој и ходи? А исцељени не знаше ко је; јер се Исус уклони, јер људства много беше на месту. А потом га нађе Исус у цркви и рече му: Ето си здрав, више не греши, да ти не буде горе. А човек отиде и каза Јеврејима да је оно Исус који га исцели.
