Monday, March 7, 2022 marks the beginning of the Great Lent.

We wish everyone a happy and blessed Lent!

To take Lent seriously means then that we will consider it first of all on the deepest possible level - as a spiritual challenge which requires a response, a decision, a plan, a continuous effort. It is for this reason, as we know, that the weeks of preparation for Lent were established by the Church. This is the time for the response, for the decision and the planning. And the best and easiest way here is to follow the Church's guidance - be it only by meditating on the five Gospel themes offered to us on the five Sundays of the pre-lenten season: that of desire (Zaccaeus), of humility (Publican and Pharisee), of the return from exile (Prodigal Son), of the judgement (Last Judgement), and of forgiveness (Forgiveness Sunday). These Gospel lessons are not merely to be listened to in church; the whole point is that they are to me "taken home" and meditated upon in terms of my life, my family situation, my professional obligations, my concern for material things, my relation to the concrete human beings with whom I live. If to this meditation one adds the prayer of that pre-lenten season, "Open to me the gates of repentance, O Giver of Life..." and Psalm 137 - "By the rivers of Babylon..." - one begins to understand what it means to "feel with the Church" how a liturgical season colors the daily life. It is also a good time to read a religious book. The purpose of this reading is not only to increase our knowledge about religion; it is mainly to purify our mind from all that which usually fills it. It is simply incredible how crowded our minds are with all kinds of cares, interests, anxieties, and impressions, and how little control we have over that crowd. Reading a religious book, concentrating our attention on something entirely different from the usual contents of our thinking, creates by itself another mental and spiritual atmosphere. These are not "recipes" - there may be other ways of preparing oneself for Lent. The important point is that during this pre-lenten season we look at Lent as it were from a distance, as something coming to us or even perhaps sent to us by God Himself, as a chance for a change, for renewal, for deepening, and that we take that forthcoming chance seriously, so that on Forgiveness Sunday when we leave our home for Vespers we may be ready to make ours - be it only in a small way - the words of the Great Prokeimenon which will inaugurate Lent: "Turn not away Thy face from Thy servant, for I am afflicted...".

Срећан и благословен пост желимо свима!

Озбиљно схватити Велики пост значи, прије свега, да га посматрамо у основи - као духовни изазов, који тражи одговор, план, непрестани подвиг. Ово је, као што знамо, и био разлог да је Црква установила недјеље припреме за Велики пост. То је вријеме за одговор, за одлуку и план. Најбољи и најлакши пут је слиједимо упуту Цркве - било само да размишљамо о пет јеванђелских тема које нам се нуде у пет недјеља пред постом: о жељи (Закхеј), о понизности (Митар и Фарисеј), о повратку из изгнанства (блудни син), о суду (посљедњи суд) и о праштању (недјеља праштања). Ови одјељци из Јеванђеља нису зато да буду у цркви само слушани. Суштина је да се «понесу кући» и да се о њима размишља у терминима мога живота, моје породичне ситуације, мојих службених обавеза, моје бриге за материјалне ствари, мојих односа према конкретним људским бићима, са којима живимо.

Ако се овим размишљањима додају молитве: «Отвори ми врата покајања, Животодавче...» и псалам 137 «На ријекама вавилонским», које се пјевају прије почетка поста, човјек почиње да размишља шта то значи «осјећати са Црквом» како литургичко вријеме даје печат свакодневном животу. То је вријеме да се прочита и религиозна књига. Није циљ овог читања да се повећа наше знање о религији. Оно је, углавном, зато да се очисти наш ум од свега оног што га испуњава. Невјероватно је колико је наш ум оптерећен са свим врстама брига, интереса, стрепњи и утисака и колико мало контроле имамо над свим тим. Читање религиозне књиге, концентрација наше пажње на нешто сасвим другачије од обичног садржаја нашег мишљења, само по себи ствара другу менталну и духовну атмосферу. Нису то «рецепт» - могу да постоје и други начини да се човјек припреми за Велики пост. Веома је важно да за вријеме ове предпосне сезоне, на Велики пост гледамо са растојања, као на нешто што нам долази од Бога или чак можда нешто што нам сам Бог шаље, као прилику за опомену, за обнову, за продубљивање. Ту прилику која нам предстоји треба да узмемо озбиљно, тако да кад у недјељу праштања кренемо на вечерње богослужење, можемо да будемо спремни да ријечи великог прокимена, којим се објављује Велики пост доживимо као своје властите ријечи: «Не окрени лице своје од слуге свога, јер сам тужан...»
