“Man of God,” the award-winning movie about the inspirational life of our beloved Orthodox saint, Saint Nektarios of Aegina was a box office success on the first night of its two-night-only release, finishing in fourth position among the top-five highest grossing films, behind “The Batman”, “Jujutsu Kaisen 0” and “Uncharted” on Monday, March 21.

“‘Man of God’ is a great choice for Lenten viewing, reminding us to do our part in trampling the accuser under our feet as we pursue the unglamorous path of holiness,” said Andrew Petiprin in his review of the movie for Word on Fire. “‘Man of God: Finally, a movie tailor-made for Lent” said David Ives in his review of the movie for Aleteia. “‘Man of God’ is a surprising work of cinematic Lenten devotion” says Nick Olszyk in his review for The Catholic World Report.

“Man of God” was originally scheduled to be released in select theaters nationwide for one night only (March 21). But, due to popular demand, Fathom Events added another showing, on March 28.

Exiled unjustly, convicted without a trial and slandered without cause, St. Nektarios of Aegina’s life was one of persecution and prosecution. A priest of the common people, St. Nektarios’s popularity provoked the jealousy of the clergy in Alexandria and, as a result, he was defrocked and expelled from Egypt. In contrast to his religious “superiors”, Nektarios cared for the poor, taught peasant girls to read and write, and performed miracles. Even his last moment on earth was used to help another: upon his death, Nektarios’ undergarment was removed, and as it fell upon a paralyzed man in the hospital bed next to him, the lame man miraculously arose to walk. So, too, do we hope MAN OF GOD will awaken the paralyzed faith in audiences around the world.

Nektarios was recognized as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church in 1961, and his feast day is celebrated Nov. 9. The music for the film was composed by two-time French Cesar winner Zbigniew Preisner with special performance by Golden Globe winner Lisa Gerrard.

Clergy from other parishes in the Washington deanery will join us next Friday. It is a tradition that during Great Lent, we have at least one joint service in each parish.

After Liturgy, we will have Lenten dinner followed by a lecture and questions and answer session. The guest priest will be Fr. Ivan Marjanovic from Portland, ME.

If you plan to receive Holy Communion at this Liturgy, please abstain from food from noontime.

Our St. Sava Children's Choir has been invited to join the Junior Mass Choir at the SSF festival in Monroeville, PA on May 27-29, 2022. Please let me (Boba) know if your child(ren) would be interested in participating. We had children from three families participate in the last festival in Phoenix and it was spectacular.

Also, our church choir is hosting their annual concert on Saturday, April 30, 2022. Please mark this in your calendars as the children's choir has been invited to perform!

"Predicated on Decision No.148/Min.98, of the Holy Synod of Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church of March 1, 2022 concerning the crisis in Ukraine, We hereby ordain that all church-school congregations, mission parishes and persons of good will of the Eastern American Diocese undertake a special fundraising initiative to help the suffering people of Ukraine, effective March 20, 2022 – The Second Sunday of Great and Holy Lent. As per the above-mentioned Decision of the Holy Synod, all collected donations to will be sent through our Patriarchate in Belgrade to His Beatitude Metropolitan Onyfriy of Kiev and All Ukraine."
