Lazar was one of the Serbian noblemen who ruled the Serbian empire after the death of Tsar Dušan. After the death of Tsar Uroš, Patriarch Ephraim crowned Lazar as the Serbian king. Lazar sent a delegation to Constantinople with the monk Isaiah to implore the patriarch to lift [remove] the anathema from the Serbian people. He fought against the Turkish powers on several occasions. Finally, on June 15, 1389 A.D., he clashed [fought] with the Turkish Emperor Amurat at Kosovo Polje [the Field of Blackbirds, Kosovo Polje] where he was beheaded. His body was transported to and interred in Ravanica, the monastery he founded [Zaduzbina] near Ćuprija, and was later transported to [New] Ravanica in Srem, and from there, during the Second World War (1942), it was moved to Belgrade and placed in the Cathedral Church of the Holy Archangel Michael, where it rests today incorrupt, extending comfort and healing to all those who turn to him with prayer.^(*) St. Lazar restored the monasteries of Hilandar [Mt. Athos] and Gornjak. He built Ravanica and Lazarica [in Kruševac] and was a benefactor of the Russian monastery St. Pantaleon [Mt. Athos] as well as many other churches and monasteries.

  (*) In 1989, on the occasion of the 600th anniversary of his martyrdom, St. Lazar's relics were again moved to the Monastery of Ravanica in Ćuprija.

Један од великаша српских, који су владали царством српским после цара Душана. По смрти цара Уроша Лазар би крунисан од патријарха Јефрема за цара српског. Слао изасланство у Цариград, са монахом Исаијом да моли да се скине анатема са народа српског. Борио се против силе турске у неколико махова. Најзад сукоби се на Косову пољу 1389. године 15. јуна са турским царем Амуратом, где буде посечен. Тело му пренето и сахрањено у његовој задужбини Раваници код Ћуприје, а доцније пренето одатле у Раваницу Сремску, одакле је за време Другог светског рата (1942. године.) пренето у Београд и положено у Саборну цркву, где и данас нетљено почива и пружа утехе и исцелење свима онима који му се молитвом обраћају. Обновио Хиландар и Горњак; подигао Раваницу и Лазарицу; био ктитором манастира руског Пантелејмона као и многих других цркава и манастира. (Сада његове свете мошти почивају у манастиру Раваници).

Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.
