| | Vigil at the Tomb of Christ on Good Friday | | |
In many Orthodox parishes, after the Lamentations service on Good Friday evening, a vigil is held around the Shroud, which symbolizes Christ's burial. During this vigil, people stay by the Shroud, praying and reading psalms from the end of the Lamentations service until the Liturgy of St. Basil on Holy Saturday. This tradition is also observed in some Western churches. In the Dalmatian village of Vrlika, a unique tradition called the "Guardians of Christ's Tomb" has developed. Men dressed in traditional Dalmatian folk costumes take turns guarding the tomb of Christ in pairs, remaining in silence throughout the night. According to legend, a pilgrim from Vrlika visited Jerusalem, where he witnessed this practice during Good Friday and Easter. Impressed by the tradition, he brought it back to Vrlika.
For us Christians, the Resurrection of Christ is the greatest event in the history of mankind. To fully appreciate the miracle of Christ's resurrection from the dead, it is important to understand the significance of His suffering, so that we can ultimately see His glorious resurrection. We participate through the Passion Gospels read on Holy Thursday as well as the moving services on Good Friday, and the vigil at the Tomb of Christ gives us additional time to delve into the mystery of Christ's Passion and to share in His suffering.
After our Lord was crucified and died on the cross, Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea took the body of Jesus, wrapped it in linen cloths with spices, and buried it in a new tomb. Mary Magdalene and the other Mary sat opposite the tomb and watched as their Lord was buried and remained at the tomb for a long time. The Church has joined these two women throughout the centuries in guarding the tomb of Jesus. The Good Friday Vigil at the Holy Tomb is our opportunity to help keep watch over the body of our Lord as He descends into hell to loose the bonds of death.

У многим православним парохијама постоји традиција да се после службе оплакивања Христа на Велики Петак увече држи бдење или стражa око Плаштанице која представља Христово полагање у гроб. Окупљени око плаштанице проводе време од завршетка службе оплакивања до Василијеве Литургије на Велику суботу у молитвеном читању псалама. Ова традиција постоји и у неким западним црквама. У далматинском селу Врлика се развила посебна традиција Чувари Христовог гроба, где мушкарци одевени у традиционалну далматинску народну ношњу чувају Христов гроб два по два проводећи целу ноћ у тишини. Предање каже да је неко од ходочасника путовао из Врлике у Јерусалим и тамо провео Велики петак и Васкрс и да је тамо видео ову традицију која му се свидела па је пренео у Врлику.
За нас Хршћане Васкрсење Христово је највећи догађај у историји човечанства. Да бисмо у потпуности ценили чудо Христовог васкрсења из мртвих, важно је да разумемо значај његових страдања, да бисмо могли на крају да видимо Његово славно васкрсење. Ми учествујемо кроз страдална еванђеља која се читају на Велики Четвртак као и дирљиве службе на Велики петак а бдење поред плаштанице Христове нам даје додатно време да се удубимо у тајну Христовог страдања и да саучествујемо са њим.
Након што је наш Господ распет и умро на крсту, Никодим и Јосиф из Ариматеје су узели тело Исусово, увили га у ланено платно са мирисима и сахранили га у новом гробу. Марија Магдалена и друга Марија седе насупрот гроба и гледају како је њихов Господ сахрањен и остају дуго поред гроба. Црква се током векова придружила овим двема женама у чувању Исусовог гроба. Бденије Великог Петка на Христовом гробу је наша прилика да помогнемо да бдијемо над телом нашег Господа док силази у пакао да разреши окове смрти.

Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was who had been dead, whom He had raised from the dead. There they made Him a supper; and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those who sat at the table with Him. Then Mary took a pound of very costly oil of spikenard, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil. But one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, who would betray Him, said, Why was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor? This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the money box; and he used to take what was put in it. But Jesus said, “Let her alone; she has kept this for the day of My burial. For the poor you have with you always, but Me you do not have always.” Now a great many of the Jews knew that He was there; and they came, not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might also see Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead. But the chief priests plotted to put Lazarus to death also, because on account of him many of the Jews went away and believed in Jesus. The next day a great multitude that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out: “Hosanna! ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!’ The King of Israel!” Then Jesus, when He had found a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written: “Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your King is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt.” His disciples did not understand these things at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about Him and that they had done these things to Him. Therefore the people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of his tomb and raised him from the dead, bore witness. For this reason the people also met Him, because they heard that He had done this sign.

А Исус пре пасхе на шест дана дође у Витанију где беше Лазар што умре, кога подиже из мртвих. Онде Му, пак, зготовише вечеру, и Марта служаше, а и Лазар сеђаше с њим за трпезом; А Марија узевши литру правог нардовог многоценог мира помаза ноге Исусове, и отре косом својом ноге Његове; а кућа се напуни мириса од мира. Онда рече један од ученика Његових, Јуда Симонов Искариотски, који Га после издаде: Зашто се ово миро не продаде за триста гроша и не даде сиромасима? А ово не рече што се стараше за сиромахе, него што беше лупеж, и имаше ковчежић, и ношаше што се меташе у њ. А Исус рече: Не дирајте у њу; она је то дохранила за дан мог погреба; Јер сиромахе свагда имате са собом, а мене немате свагда. Разуме, пак, многи народ из Јудеје да је онде и дођоше не само Исуса ради него и да виде Лазара ког подиже из мртвих. А главари свештенички договорише се да и Лазара убију; Јер многи њега ради иђаху из Јудеје и вероваху Исуса. А сутрадан, многи од народа који беше дошао на празник, чувши да Исус иде у Јерусалим Узеше гране од финика и изиђоше Му на сусрет, и викаху говорећи: Осана! Благословен који иде у име Господње, цар Израиљев. А Исус нашавши магаре уседе на њ, као што је писано: Не бој се кћери Сионова, ево цар твој иде седећи на магарету. Али ово ученици Његови не разумеше пре: него кад се прослави Исус онда се опоменуше да ово беше за Њега писано, и ово Му учинише. А народ сведочаше који беше пре с Њим кад Лазара изазва из гроба и подиже га из мртвих. Зато Га и срете народ, јер чуше да Он учини ово чудо.
