An Ambassador Named Bentley
The Reverend Mother Nina Bacas
| |
St. Francis must have really grabbed a hold of me last month because I keep seeing God in our animal kingdom. Last week it was an angel masquerading as a dog. This past Sunday, it was a horse dressed up like a giraffe. [...]
“Fall Back” Time Change
Nov 4-5
Daylight Saving Time ends this weekend. Before you go to bed on Saturday, November 4, remember to set your clocks back by one hour (e.g., at 11 p.m., change your clocks to 10 p.m.). The good news is, you gain an hour of sleep that night, so you will be refreshed when you join us at church on Sunday morning. See you there!

2024 Stewardship Update
Forward in Faith—Give for a Vital Future. Thanks to everyone who has already pledged generously to St. Bart’s Church for 2024! Over 100 families have pledged, and we are at almost 60% of our $900,000 goal. Every pledge helps us to plan and budget for our 2024 mission and important ministries. If you haven’t submitted yours yet, there’s still time—we need everyone’s participation. Our Forward in Faith Giving Sunday is November 19.
At this week’s 10 a.m. Sunday service, longtime parishioner and choir member
Mollie Allan will tell us why she gives, and we’ll hear a giving update from
Bill Angus. Stewardship updates will be provided at the other services as
well.
Questions? Contact Anne Hand, Campaign Co-Chair, or Bill Angus, St. Bart’s Treasurer.

Second Opportunity to Order St. Bart’s T-shirts
Mother Nina would love for us to show our church spirit by wearing our St. Bart's apparel for our upcoming Forward in Faith Ingathering Saturday/Sunday on November 18/19. We have asked the company to do another run of shirts for us. The shirts are a much brighter/bolder color of blue with bigger font and image on the back. We all looked great marching in the Poway Parade and now is the time to show our spirit again!
The ordering window starts at noon on Thursday, November 2, and closes at 1 p.m. on Monday, November 6. The more orders placed, the lower the cost of the shirts becomes. Click the button below to order your St. Bart’s T-shirt ASAP!

Youth Crew Halloween Costume Party
Volunteers Needed for Youth Events
Please consider helping out at our Sunday Youth Forums during the 9 a.m. Education Hour. All youth events require the presence of two adults, and these sessions are only possible through the participation of adult volunteers like you!
| |
We also need volunteers for our Youth Crew gatherings on Wednesday nights, 6-8 p.m. We attend the ReGen service on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month; make lunches and do service projects on the 2nd Wednesday; and play games, do art and watch movies on the 4th and 5th Wednesdays.
Calling All Parishioners: Year-End Outreach Ministries at St. Bart’s
The last three months of the year are a very busy time for St. Bart’s outreach ministries, and we have many opportunities for everyone to engage in both hands-on service and the giving of gifts to our neighbors. Please join us for the ministries that call to you. Click the button below to see all the upcoming year-end events, and contact the ministry coordinators listed for more information.

24th Annual Thanksgiving Basket Donations
Return baskets on Nov 19
Help dozens of families in the Interfaith Community Services (ICS) transitional-housing program enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving meal home-cooked in their very own kitchen! On the first two weekends of November, pick up your shopping lists and empty laundry baskets on the St. Bart’s patio. Return the filled baskets the morning of Sunday, November 19, for distribution to the families that day.
Over the last 23 years, St. Bart’s parishioners have provided baskets for just shy of 2,000 families. We are currently seeking one or two families to coordinate this ministry, as the ministry founders are “retiring” after 20+ years. Contact (for now): JD Cowart.
If you would like to donate financially toward this ministry, click the button below, then select “One-time” at the top right of the page. From the Fund drop-down menu, select “Thanksgiving Baskets” before proceeding with payment information.

Youth Collecting Toiletries
Nov 5
The Youth Crew is making toiletry bags for those in need. This is your last weekend to donate items; there is a container for donations in the back of the sanctuary. Any additional items needed will be purchased from the youth budget so we can put together complete bags for recipients. Thank you for helping us with this vital service/outreach.
Items needed:
- Little bottles of shampoo, conditioner and body wash
- Toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss and little bottles of mouthwash
- Disposable razors and shaving cream
- Feminine hygiene products
- Sunscreen, lotion and lip balm
- Small combs and hairbrushes

Parents Night Out
Nov 17
The children, youth and parents have been asking when the next Parents Night Out is going to be, so we have set a date for Friday, November 17, 5-8 p.m. Parents, enjoy three hours of freedom! Drop off your children in the MPR, sign them in, fill out waivers and give a goodwill donation to our Youth Crew Fundraising Fund (suggested donation per family is $30 for the first child and $10 for each additional child). Contact Lauren Sleeper by November 15 at 9 p.m. if your child/ren would like to participate. The children will be fed dinner, do crafts, play games and watch the movie Free Birds. Click the link below to see a preview.

Help Decorate the Ronald McDonald House
Nov 18
Last year, our Youth Crew joined with other service groups, such as local Kiwanis Clubs, Key Clubs and Girl Scouts, to decorate the Ronald McDonald House across the street from Rady Children’s Hospital. We built and decorated Christmas trees, hung wreaths, tied bows and more! It was a great service project that helped remind us of our good health and good fortune.
We are headed there again on Saturday, November 18, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. (or until every last bit of cleanup is completed!). Donuts will be available on arrival, and lunch will be served to all volunteers. Email Lauren Sleeper if you would like to participate and/or need to carpool.

Performances will be on Saturday, November 4, at 7 p.m., and Sunday, November 5, at 4 p.m. Visit the St. Bart’s music website and get your tickets today!

What is Godly Play? What is Re:form? What does St. Bart’s offer adults for Christian formation? Join us in the MPR this Sunday at 9 a.m. for a taste of each as we walk through Christian Education for ages 3 to 103!

ReGeneration Thanksgiving Service
Nov 15
Since we will not be having a service on Thanksgiving Day this year, the ReGeneration Contemporary Worship Service clergy, band and volunteers are instead hosting a Thanksgiving Dinner Church service with Eucharist on Wednesday, November 15, at 6 p.m. It will include a meal provided by the Music Ministries of St. Bart’s and will be held in the sanctuary so there is enough room for our congregation to enjoy eating together. Mark your calendars for this festive event! To learn more about the ReGen interactive worship experience, click the button below.
| |
Parishioners are invited to send in photos and short announcements about their families that they would like to share with the congregation: graduations, marriages, birth of a child, promotions, transfers, new house, upcoming performances or games that the congregation can attend and support. We all missed years of connecting with one another in person. Here is an opportunity to build back our community and help us learn about each other and share the Good News! Please send photos and stories to news@stbartschurch.org.
McClellands’ New Granddaughter
Greg and Cyndi McClelland have a new baby granddaughter. Shea Elise McClelland was born on October 23. Congratulations, grandparents!!!

Remembering Dr. Nan Haugen
Earlier this week, we lost one of our parishioners of over 22 years. Besides sharing a great love for her dogs, coaching and playing tennis, playing piano, doing jigsaw puzzles with her wife, and being a supporter of St. Bart's. Please join us in the sanctuary this Saturday at 11 a.m. to celebrate the life of Dr. Nan Haugen and offer our support and care to her wife, June Scopinich.

John Dentone Recognized by RefugeeNet
Katherine Bom of RefugeeNet wrote a profile of one of their volunteers, John Dentone, who happens to be a very active member of St. Bart’s. John is one of our vergers and recently became the Interim Coordinator of Pastoral Care. He is also a dedicated volunteer with our food ministries.

Poway church music director says ‘Good Night’ to his father with choral requiem
John-Luke Addison will premiere the choral work in memory of his dad, George Addison, at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Poway next weekend
BY GREG MORAN
OCT. 29, 2023 6 AM PT
[The San Diego Union-Tribune] When his father died in August 2022, John-Luke Addison—the director of music at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Poway—decided not to dash off a piece of music in time for the memorial service.
Instead, the 33-year-old Addison wanted to compose something more substantial that would reflect both his love for his father, George, and his grief at his passing. Over much of the next year, he channeled that desire into a composition that will have its premiere at the church next weekend. [...]
