Remembrance Ofrenda
The Rev. Mother Nina Bacas
| |
The ofrenda, which began as a Mexican tradition for the Día de los Muertos, is a remembrance table created by many households on the Feast of All Saints. One of our seven principal celebrations in the church, it is a time to honor and remember all Christians. For many, it is a time to remember loved ones who have preceded us to heaven.
Of course, this feast always coincides with the celebration of Halloween. This name is derived from “All Hallows’ Eve”—the hallowed (you know the word from the Lord’s Prayer) are saints or holy persons. Many traditions believe that on this evening the veil between heaven and earth is thin and spirits may briefly walk the land again; an ofrenda welcomes the beloveds.
What I love about Halloween and All Saints’ is the posture we take toward death. As Christians, Halloween can be our way of poking fun at death, declaring “You don’t scare me!” Then on All Saints we celebrate the continuity of life on earth and heaven, and how love is eternal in Christ.
At St. Bart’s this All Saints’ weekend, we will have a “Remembrance Ofrenda” set up at the back of the sanctuary. We invite you to bring photos and mementos of your loved ones to display. Our ofrenda will remain for the month of November.
We will also honor departed loved ones at our Brahms’ A German Requiem concert this Sunday at 4 p.m. Please come and experience this profoundly moving choral masterpiece.
All of us go down to the dust; yet even at the grave we make our song: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Mother Nina+

Remember the Departed: All Saints’ Table of Remembrance
All Saints’ Weekend, October 31–November 1
This weekend, to commemorate those we have loved and lost, a “Table of Remembrance” will be set up in the narthex, on the credenza that holds our statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe. We invite all parishioners to bring photos or mementos of anyone you’d like to pray for and place them on the table. The table will remain up for the remainder of the week.

ST. BART’S MUSIC SERIES:
Brahms German Requiem
Sunday, November 1, 4 p.m., Sanctuary
Join director John-Luke Addison and the St. Bart’s Community Chorus this Sunday for their performance of Johannes Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem (A German Requiem). One of the great masterpieces of the choral repertoire, the requiem offers a message of comfort and hope to the living rather than mourning for the dead. Presented in Brahms’ own four-hand piano accompaniment, this intimate version preserves the work’s profound emotional depth and musical grandeur while allowing the text and choral writing to shine with remarkable clarity. Tickets $20 ($10 for students), available in advance at the St. Bart’s Music website.

St. Bart’s 2027 Annual Giving Campaign
Our 2027 Giving Campaign kicked off earlier this month; this year’s theme is “One Church. One Boat. One River.” By now we’ve mailed out all pledge packets, which include a letter from Mother Nina and an information sheet outlining St. Bart’s milestone accomplishments in 2026 and how your pledge dollars support the church’s operations, mission, and values.
A big thank you to everyone who has submitted their pledge—we are off to a strong start toward reaching our 2027 Giving Campaign goal of $970,000!
If you haven’t already pledged, we invite you to watch this short video by the Borkowski family sharing why they give, and then prayerfully consider your own pledge. You can mail your pledge card in the provided envelope or drop it in the offertory basket, or pledge online. If you need assistance pledging or setting up regular online giving, contact our bookkeeper, Joelene Showers.

Consider Running for Vestry!
The vestry serves as the church’s board of directors and governs the business of the parish. Led by the rector and wardens, the vestry represents the congregation in every area of decision-making and welcomes ideas and feedback at any time.
Vestry membership includes 12 adult lay leaders, one youth representative, the rector, and parish officers. Members are elected to three-year terms at the parish annual meeting in January; the nonvoting youth representative serves for one year. Candidates must be confirmed, provide financial support to the parish with an annual pledge, and have been members of the parish for a minimum of six months.
To learn more, contact Mother Nina or Senior Warden Jerry Gray.

Project Mercy: A Thank You
On Saturday, October 17, St. Bart’s once again joined forces with our neighbors at Incarnation Lutheran to build a house in the northern Baja region of Mexico for Alejandro and Juana and their children, Maybeth (3) and Rubén (5) (pictured).
Juana thanks you all:
Life is always difficult in this colonia. With no sewer system, we really appreciate the outhouse you built. The heat is suffocating, so our new roof will help. And when it’s cold, it feels freezing because air would seep through the cracks. For my family, what matters is that we’d have more protection; since our old home didn’t have a floor, animals sometimes sneak in.

Cursillo candidates are invited to attend an all-expenses-paid weekend to learn about the Cursillo movement and, most importantly, experience the love, warmth, and welcome of the Cursillistas—people who have previously participated in Cursillo. Our next Cursillo weekend will be February 18-21, 2027. Come and discover how a weekend of faith, fellowship, and Christian love can make a difference in your spiritual journey!
