We Had a Great Time at the Community Shabbaton!


This past weekend, more than 100 members of the AC community joined us to celebrate Shabbat together at the Isabella Freedman Retreat Center. We had a wonderful time enjoying a restful and enriching Shabbat with activities for all ages, from prayer and study to hiking and boating. Book Drive for PS 145

Sunday, May 3 from 11am - 1pm in the AC Lobby

 

Does your family have children’s books that you no longer use? We warmly invite you to help fill the PS 145 Bookshelf by donating new and gently used children’s books. PS 145 students “shop” (at no cost) at the Bookshelf for books to take home, keep, and enjoy. Please refer to the following guidelines; donors will be asked to take any books back home that do not meet these criteria. Due to storage limitations, please do not drop off books on other days or times. Can't make it to donate on this date? Not to worry, there will be future book drives!

Longtime Ansche Chesed member, Jane Eisner, recently published Carole King: She Made the Earth Move. The book focuses on the professional accomplishments and personal challenges of pop icon Carole King, exploring her unique contribution to American music. Please join the community to hear from Jane, in conversation with longtime AC member and Columbia School of Journalism professor, Sam Freedman. Their conversation will be accompanied by King's iconic music and a Q&A session. Books will be available for purchase and Jane Eisner will be available for a signing afterwards. RSVP here

"Binders of the Covenant" Exhibit Tour

Sunday, May 24 from 3 - 4pm at the Walsh Library 


Please join AC member Lois Roman for a guided tour of the "Binders of the Covenant" exhibit at the Walsh Library of Fordham University. Lois is also a Trustee of the Memorial Scrolls Trust, a London-based charity that looks after Judaica that survived the Shoah in Prague. “Binders of the Covenant” brings to life the story of Torah binders from the Memorial Scrolls Trust. The exhibit spotlights 25 historic binders that survived the Shoah and explores their significance for European Jewry, genealogy, and why they have relevance in today’s world. RSVP here

Wednesday, June 10 from 6 - 7pm in the Mayer Cavalier Chapel


Join our in-person book group for literary conversation rooted in Jewish themes and storytelling as we discuss The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store by James McBride. Set in a close-knit, multiethnic neighborhood, the novel highlights Jewish themes of justice, moral responsibility, and caring for the stranger. Reading Biblical and Prayerbook Hebrew Class

Mondays, 5:45 - 6:45pm at AC (dates TBD)


In this course with experienced and skilled teacher Nadav Wiesel, we will build our knowledge of foundational Biblical and prayer book Hebrew vocabulary and grammar, deepening our ability to read and understand the language. We will combine workbook exercises with guided reading of authentic biblical texts, allowing us to engage directly with the tradition. This class is intended for people with a basic foundation in Hebrew. If you would be interested in joining, please contact Josh. Note that it would be a 10-session semester for a total cost of $360, expected May through early July.
