Who Is Our Patronal Saint?

For those who have been at St. Bart’s for over a year, I’m sure you can easily recite the answer to this question. We have preached about “our” saint on his day every year that I’ve been here. This weekend I’m your preacher, but I’m not intending to provide a full sketch of Nathaniel Bartholomew this year. Having planned that, I do wonder how much our newcomers and new members over the past year may know about him. So, for those who missed the last St. Bart’s Day, or came to us later, below is a link to my sermon from St. Bart’s Day 2025. I hope it answers your questions, but if not, do ask your clergy. We have many fun activities to celebrate Saint Bartholomew this weekend. Come for worship and to join the fun!

St. Bart’s Weekend
August 29-30
This weekend is our annual celebration of the feast day of our patron saint, Bartholomew! Enjoy wine and cheese after the Saturday service on August 29, and/or stay after the 10 a.m. service on August 30 for a barbecue lunch hosted by the Vestry. You're invited to bring a side dish, salad, or fruit to share, and Vestry members will provide desserts.

On the last Sunday of every month, St. Bart’s makes sandwiches to be taken to Interfaith Community Services, one of our Outreach partners. Please join us this Sunday after the 10 a.m. service to assemble meals for those in need!

Every month, let’s supplement our Free Farmers Market with common food items that our clients are requesting! We need single-family-sized packages that are easy to distribute. In August, please bring:

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY:
Feeding San Diego
Sundays, 9:30-10 a.m. & 1:30-4 p.m., MPR
Thank you to all of our volunteers—your help every Sunday has been a blessing! In the four months since we relaunched a Feeding San Diego food distribution site at St. Bart’s, we’ve had over 40 individuals join us in serving our neighbors in need. We continue to serve an average of 35 households each week, have used our chapel as an air-conditioned waiting room during the recent hot weather, and are now using the St. Bart’s Outreach Ministry van for our morning food rescue.
In addition to signing up for our morning and afternoon shifts at the link below, if you’d like to take on a larger role, we would love to hear directly from you. We could use more assistance for morning pickup (8:45-9:30 a.m.), as well as volunteers to run one of our afternoon distributions.

Meals Needed for Youth CREW
Wednesdays, 6 p.m., Youth Room or MPR
Our Youth CREW programming returns on Wednesday evenings starting September 2, and we need volunteers to provide dinner for 8-10 youth each week. Kid-friendly meals such as spaghetti and salad, fried chicken and fixings, hot dogs and hamburgers, and pizza are always a hit! If you can help out, please sign up using the link below. COMMUNITY OUTREACH:
St. Bart’s Interfaith Feeding Ministry Needs Occasional Volunteers!
For more than 20 years, St. Bart’s has been serving meals to residents in various Interfaith Community Services programs in Escondido. We need a few more people to occasionally take a shift as a chef’s aide from 3 to 5:30 p.m. on the first, third, or fifth Sunday of the month. Working in teams of two, you’ll help with food prep for future meals and then serve dinner—as well as ice cream!—to approximately 60 residents in the ICS detox and recovery program.
This volunteer activity is much appreciated by those we serve—please consider joining us!
Most people help out just once every month or two; others are subs. Individuals encouraged as we have several singles who need a partner to serve with them from time to time.
Volunteers are currently needed on August 30 (1), September 20 (1), October 18 (1), November 1 (1), November 15 (1), and November 29 (2). To sign up for a shift, contact Jill Henderson.

Choir School Starts Tonight!
First Rehearsal on Thursday, August 27, 5:30 p.m., Music Room
Our St. Bart’s Choir School is returning—enrich your child’s life with a well-rounded musical education and nurture their love of music and singing! The program is open to children ages 6 and up; rehearsals are on Thursdays, 5:30-6:30 p.m., and the children sing on the first Sunday of the month at the 10 a.m. service. The Season of Creation Is Coming
The Season of Creation is almost here! During this annual ecumenical celebration, faith communities around the world pray and act together to honor and protect the earth, our common home. The celebration officially begins on September 1, the Day of Prayer for Creation, and ends on October 4, the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of ecology beloved by many Christian denominations.
At St. Bart’s, we’ll be commemorating the season with special events/activities throughout September, culminating with the Blessing of the Animals on October 3-4. Click on the button below for more information and to get a sneak peek at the schedule of events!

The 61st annual Poway Rotary Parade will take place RAIN or SHINE on Saturday, September 12! St. Bart’s parishioners will be walking the parade route, this year alongside our new van! If you would you like to be in the parade and help us spread our church’s “All are welcome, no exceptions” message, contact Mother Nina.

BIBLE STUDY:
Angels: Finding Hope in God Who Reigns over Heaven and Earth

The Wednesday Women’s Bible Study’s fall session will start on September 16! We will be reading Melissa Spoelstra's Angels: Finding Hope in God Who Reigns over Heaven and Earth, an eight-session Bible study that traverses the terrain of Scripture from Genesis to Revelation to learn about angels—who they are, what they do, and what they have to do with you. No need to fear or ignore the supernatural, unseen realm—we can live with confidence that God is in control of it all. Prayers & Squares Quilt Ministry
Prayers & Squares offers prayer quilts to all people who are in crisis and need prayer. Before requesting a quilt, please check with the recipient to see if they will accept a prayer quilt, and ask them for the specific words of prayer they would like prayed over the quilt.

The Learning Treehouse Preschool
The Learning Treehouse Preschool, located on the St. Bart’s campus, offers play-based education for children 18 months to 6 years old, with a maximum of 12 children per classroom.
